Nickle guard is what you should use. Also you should clean around the compressor. Blow out the condenser. I have a service manual for you:

Have you got a slow flash or fast flash?

Is the cutting grid getting warm if just warm make sure you don't have any loose wires supplying power to grid. Check grid cutting transformer to make sure it is working. make sure grid is clean. If you are getting power to cutting grid and it's not getting warm then cube let cutter grid is bad. If this needs to be replaced you might thank about a new machine the cost for this part is around 480.00 part number AP2068335

Ive just put a new grid cutter in my whirlpool ice maker but it is not heatinh up to cut the ice sheets into cubes. Any ideas what to do next?

Yes the next step is to check the voltage on the secondary side of the grid transformer found in the photo on page 30 of the=> 15 and 18 inch Whirlpool Ice Maker Service Manual

GI15NFLXS Grid Transformer

I hope the manual is a big help in resolving the ice cutting problem and please ask should you have any questions. The secondary side of the transformer should be showing a least 8.5 volts ac. Let me know if you are able to find the problem, Thanks Sea Breeze
The 18 inch ice maker takes the same grid transformer as the 15 inch model.

If the cutting grid is only getting warm this would indicate a loose wire, a dirty grid or a defective grid transformer. As much as these grids cost it would pay to search for the problem that is causing this. The transformer is near the control board=> WR62X10015 Transformer

If this an under the counter ice maker the machine is going to run water all the time with the exception of when the ice slides down to the cutting grid to be dropped.

Have kitchenaid undercounter ice maker, came with the house i bought a year ago. the problem is the water freezes in the resevoir. i have replaced the circulating pump, the thermistor, some sensor,...

on the right side of the ice bin and above the cutter grid are 2 sensor plugs, unplug the one towards the rear of the machine (usually has light brown w/red striped wires). if this does not fix the problem then replace the main control board and the transformer. Also the water doesn't go to the grid, it rolls across the evaporator, freezes a slab of ice that then slides down to the cutter grid. the cutter grid should be somewhat warm, it is what cuts the ice into the little squares. I've worked on these machines for around 7 years now and have only seen this problem once, this should fixya

I have a viking undercounter ice maker Model VUIM 150 DRSS. The ice maker makes a heet of ies and then it looks like it "slides down" to a grid of wires which the weight of the ice causes it to split into...

The grid of wires (i.e. cutting grid) is supposed to be powered at the start of the "harvest cycle" I believe that unit has a 12 VAC transformer to power the grid. Either the grid has a broken wire, the transformer is bad or something is not letting power travel from the transformer to the grid (like a loose wire). If you have a multimeter you can test the grid for proper resistance which should be 5.0 to 5.9 ohms. Make sure you take the proper precautions to disconnect power from the unit before disconnecting the cutting grid to test it. I believe it is plugged into a recepticle on the side of the unit. If the grid checks out ok, you can test the recepticle for voltage...it should have power up to 35 minutes after the start of a harvest cycle. If you shut off the water supply and pull the reservoir plug, you can turn on the ice maker and have it "dry cycle" to test it's functions. It should be able to pull the evaporator plate (the cold plate) down to harvest temperature (11 degress F) in less than five minutes when there is no water flowing accross it. I hope this helps.

Under counter ice maker water pickup problem

Most likely your plastic curtain is not keeping the water in the sump area. ( I'm assuming it makes round cubes)? Look under the sump for any dripping if its a pretty steady drip replace your water curtain and the holder that's with it.

If you have a cutting grid type ice machine this is all together different and I need to tell you separately about that.

Ice jams in KUIS18NNJB Kitchenaid under counter ice maker

There are 2 sets of wires on the cutting grid that are perpendicular to each other. Electrical current passing through the wires creates heat that melts the ice. The first set cuts one direction, then the ice strips drop onto the second set that cuts the strips into cubes. Remove the cutter grid and check if the wires are broken. If they are, electrical current can't pass through the wires, so no heat. Restringing kits are available to fix this. If the wires aren't broken, you'll need a voltmeter to see if current is reaching the wires. If it isn't, then the transformer has likely failed.
