Take the power supply and use it with another known working computer. If it works, then the problemo lies with your mo bo. Replace it with the gateway part number for the mo bo and ignore the other stuff. If you can do a "repair" operation with your OS you might be able to avoid reloading the OS and all of your programs all over again and save lots of time and aggravation. Can do with XP, maybe with Win 7.

Testimonial: "I tried a NEW PS with the same rezolt. If I change the MB will I have to reload all my stuff (OS), Isn't all that stuff on the hard drive. I have read through all the info FIXYA has for the GateWay DX4640 & MS7399 and most have the same problem as me. Maybe 30 different people. You say get a GateWay part. I am thinking those parts are bad I wanted to know what MB to buy. Will all the MS7399 work , or will all the DX4640 work or is there more then those #s that I am looking for.?? One says call GateWay , If your NOT under Warrenty they don't want to talk to you. and I can't find a number for GateWay direct. I did almost all the thing FIXYA said to try to fix. I just want to know how to buy a MB.??"

Ms 7399

"on silver sticker on MB N1996 printed in white directley on MB"

here are some one eBay
N1996 Motherboards eBay

The way a PC shop like I run would 'test' it, would be to connect the PSU to another mobo after using the tester on it. This is because the testers can only test for Voltage, not 'load' (amps.) So it COULD be providing the proper Voltage, but at too low an Amperage which would cause unexpected behavior, or non-start....especially if the Power Good signal is not received by the Motherboard within say 600ms.

Ms 7399

The problem could be with the mother board. It is difficult to pin point the problem without checking Power supply, RAM and motherboard. Before going to any conclusion first disconnect everything from the Motherboard. i.e front usb connectors, front audio connectors, hard disk, cd/dvd drive and floppy drive (if there is one), cmos battery, keyboard and mouse. Now start the system. If there is no difference check with another power supply. Also clean the cpu fan if it is choked with dust.

When looking for a motherboard it may be difficult to get the same type. U may buy a board which supports core 2 duo processor and DDR II RAM. Your machine may be having DDR II RAM. Also boards are available which supports core 2 duo and DDR III Ram. That's all.

Where to connect power switch on Gateway DX4640

is this attached to the front panel inside the computer? if so attach the other end of the cable to half of an 8pin connector-that fits or a 4 pin connector of the right sized on the bottom of the motherboard.
thats my best guess
