What you need to do is go to device manager by clicking on start and control panel and find the device manager. You can also type devmgmr.msc and hit enter. Then you can see the pointer devices. You can then delete them and the right one will come back when you restart the computer you can then go back to the device manager and disable it there.

Yes, Compaq CQ42 use Synaptics Touchpad. In order to enable on/off touchpad button in your laptop, download and install the Synaptics driver first. You can get it from here:

Make sure you choose the correct one for your operating system.

Well usually with the synaptic touchpad is that they come with there system tray icon to tell us the status...
Basically if in the right hand corner of most OS and depending on your settings you will see the notification icons... In this section you should see the Synaptic Icon, usually a red square with a with Strike going through kinda with a curve in it...
IF you see it then, you mouse should be fine and it could become a hardware issue, if it is not there...
Go to Start > Control Panel > Device Manager... Go to "Mice and other pointing device" Should now see the synaptic. Right Click on it uninstall, DO NOT check box that says DELETE the driver.. then restart your system after successful uninstall and all should be working...
IF not go back to the device manager with above steps... then once there, Right Click on "mice and other pointing device" then Scan for hardware changes and it should use windows update get it for you....

Because vista is not very driver friendly...try re-downloading it and putting it on your desktop to see if it's deleting the file, or filing it in some location that makes sense only to vista...So, go back to Dell and download the Synaptic driver for your PC thats vista compatable. I haven't been to dell in eons but they use to offer two different drivers, you want the Synaptic driver. That should put a icon down by the clock to give you quick access to the settings..

look in the sys tray, (lower left of screen) one of the icons will be concerned with the touch pad. you can turn on and of the double tap here. Sounds like yours is switched off.

Try to reinstall your driver. Download it from here: driverupdate us . This tool usually keep my drivers up to date (perfectly for now) take a look
