Have you checked the voltages after that?

SOURCE: No volume control with 2 faders on Mackie CR1604 mixer

If all other functions work for those channels, the most likely problem is the fader itself. These can fail and operate more like switches rather than faders. Without witnessing the behavior, I can not state that for sure. While these mixers are not the hardest to work on, they are time consuming. The faders can be purchased from Mackie directly. If you need to have this repaired, any shop that repairs audio gear should be able to erpair this for you. Where are you located?

What is wrong with it?

FIlter capacitors in the positive supply are likely failing. These will be the larger metal cans- one may be bulging. Either way, one of them is shorting out after a certain voltage potential is achieved and causing your problem.

Replace the caps in both the positive and negative power supply sections and this should alleviate the issue. Match the working voltage rating, or even one step up in working voltage. yours are likely rated 25 volts, so a step to 35 volts would not pose an issue.

I am trying to run a monitor using the Aux Send on a Mackie Board but even with the Master Aux Send turned up there is barely any sound coming out when I try to use my microphones. Also, I noticed that...

No there is no special cord. The aux you use for a monitor should be pre fader( that means the signal comes before the volume slider) turn the individual slider all the way down. Talk into the mike at the volume you would be singing at the loudest. Adjust the gain of that chanel up untill the clip light comes on. Now back it down so it dosent come on at your loudest. Now pick the aux you want to use. Turn it up 1/2 way, turn up the master aux send coresponding to the channel aux number 1/2 way you should get sound. If it's too loud turn it down if you need more turn it up. If you have any more questions, give me a call at the shop.

I get a distorted sound from my speakers throug a Phonic Helix Board. It is connected on a PC through Fire Wire. The distortion is also there while using microphones or other inputs (CD-players etc.). It...

Hallo landgenoot ;)

It seems it is a power supply problem; distorted sound, no meters, solo buttons not working, headphones low level and distorted. One of the power supply voltages might be too low or even missing. The Helix series mixers use mainly 4 supply voltages: + 15 V and - 15 V for the analog part (audio), + 5 V for the DSP and logic and +48 V only for the phantom power. If for example the + or - 15 V is too low, clipping of the positive or negative parts of the waveform (dependng on which voltage is too low) will occur. If possible, first measure the voltages coming out of the power supply. You could use a metal part of a jack as ground reference.
For the FireWire board an extra voltage supplied by the switched PSU is used. It is specified as +12,2 V, but I measured 14 V. This voltage is lowered to + 5 V by a resistor on the FW board and a 7805 regulator. (Not very efficient!) But as far as I can see, the FW voltage is not the problem here. I have some service documentation of the Helix series mixers (12, 17 and 24, so if you need more you can conatct me: frankdevries [at] versatel.nl.

With LED intensity changing with operations, that MIGHT be a symptom of the power supply going into current limiting mode.

The first thing I would do is to check the power supply voltages with an oscilloscope to assure that the voltages are stable and not dipping...

Now from my experience when I hear that a transformer had to be replaced that means it suffered over voltage or under frequency. I would IMMEDIATELY suspect that one or more of the rectifier diodes might be open. With only half wave into the caps the voltage will dip below what the regulators can handle giving weird effects. Check the +/- 16 volts with a scope that they are PURE DC and don't have ripple due to either damaged diodes or C6 or C7 being degraded. I assume you have a schematic... if you don't here is a link:

Yamaha PSR-280 : AC power instead of DC power

An answer, but likely not a solution. I believe all Yamaha PSR series keyboards use the same 12 VDC adaptor, so I looked at the electrical schematic for another model I have. There seems to be no fuse on the power input. There are two components shown on the positive and negative wires off the power socket, but the symbols do not look like anything I have seen for fuses - they may be resistors. Power goes directly to a 5 VDC voltage regulator, which powers all of the solid state componenents. Too much voltage of the wrong type could have easily ruined many of the sensitive components.

Your only hope is to check the power socket area for the possibility of having fuses. My drawing shows the power socket, voltage regulator, and audio power amplifier being on one circuit board. That may not actually be the way it is in your model.

Good luck!
