SOURCE: staple gun
Open the chamber and drop the staples upright in to the chamber do not try to load the staples by placing them on the strip that pulls out as you do with most staple guns.

SOURCE: can't load staples
You must use the Arrow T50 staples. I tried to no avail using the T20 size staples and was ready to pull my hair out! Once I used the T50 staples, it was a breeze. I have had no issues loading staples since then.

You should not need any tools to lift the guard/nose piece. The T5 nose piece cleary has engraved on it "Pull Up To Insert Staples". To remove old staples, use a pencil or similar rod to depress the hammer/striker above the staples while the nose is open.
