Neat receipt scans a black line through part of the page

When I scan - there is a black or white thick line that marks through part of the scan

When I had this problem I contacted the Neat support team and they suggested I calibrate the scanner. I kept asking them for a solution to the black line problem and they kept saying I should calibrate. So I finally did do the calibration and it helped immensely, but didn't get rid of the line completely. In my case the line had appeared after the scanner was dropped onto my concrete floor so I think that had something to do with it. At any rate I would definitely do the calibration. I would also suggest contacting Neat as they are very prompt with responses and seem to be very helpful.

That's all I got was a black strip. My solution was to get a new Neat Receipts mobile scanner. It works great and I didn't have to make any software changes. It was worth the price for a new one compared to all the hassles I had with the old one.

When I scan two-sided to pdf, the back page has a large black vertical streak down left side.


If that is the last page that has the streak use a blank page in the original scan as the last page and then the dark line wont cover the image.

Blank scan with neat desktop scanner


Connect the scanner to a different computer.
If you get the same result, then the scanner is "dead".
It's moving the scanning-head, but not detecting (or not transmitting) any "non-base-line" information.

Either that, or you have changed the CONTRAST and/or BRIGHTNESS settings to "wash-out" the image -- like looking at a "cream" coloured piece of paper in bright sunlight -- it may look "white".

Why would my 'copies' be coming out black pages on Neat Receipts portable scanner; prior to cleaning they were heavily streaked with black lines...now totally/heavy black.


A high percentage of scanners that people use at home are made by Visioneer, although they may be labeled and sold by other companies. Xerox is one example. The Visioneer software drivers are sensitive to changes that routinely occur in MS Windows from software installations, updates, etc. On this Visioneer webpage the company says, in describing the problem, "Your scanner does not appear to be functioning normally; you are getting errors when attempting to scan, your images are not easily readable, or you are unable to access the scanner properties." and "Problems may arise after you have made changes to your Windows environment (e.g. you installed Windows Updates, you installed another scanning application, etc...).".
Instructions as well as some software utilities are available for free download on the same page. Of course this won't help if something has actually broken on your scanner, but they're pretty durable, and chances are you can fix it by closely following the instructions from Visioneer.
This answer should apply to several of the questions in this section.

I am getting a thick black lline on my scanned immages


You need to adjust the position center of the scan materials.. The scanner pulls sheets fronm the center of the feeder. Using a single sample page to scan.. You need to move the feed guides the same distance as your black line - either to left or right as appropiate.. (Which side is the mark?) to find the center w/out leaving black line edges. Keep adjusting it till you eliminate the black line. Foxed me good first time I saw it..

Black line through the middle of the document


The thick line is either because of dust sticking to the glass or a module problem. Try different brightness settings and scan white paper. If the thickness varies and also the sides of the black strip are jaggered (step like) then it is dust on Glass. use isopropyl alcohol to clean, dont use solvents. If the teickness is same for all levels of brightness and has a sharp edge always, it could be scan module problem.

Sounds like part of your scanner is not functioning and reading black all the time. Probably best to return it for a replacement.

HORIZONTAL Lines on faxed/scanned pages.


I've seen this before. Since the printer portion is working fine that points to the scanner mechanism as the culprit. There are two things I have seen cause this. 1) If the line is a perfect rectangle all the way to the edge of the page then the light bar itself is dying and there isn't much you can do to save the unit. Send it in for warranty repair if you have the option. 2) If the line is more like a skid mark like you mentioned, then the paper that is being scanned is not pressing up fully against the light bar. Not enough light is bouncing off the page and the scanner can't read it well. This can also be caused by a roller not feeding correctly and then bunching up the paper a little bit. I would check the rollers for wear or something being off center. This can sometimes be caused if the machine has ran a high volume or thick paper. I would really think the cause would be one of these two since you are getting the marks at odd intervals, if the intervals were regular it could *possibly* be the drum but as I stated before, with the print function working right, I doubt it.
