TAKE IT BACK RIGHT AWAY. if im correct switch i mite not be but i think that year ford owned jag. ford transmissions are known for having bad cooling system(over heating) for the trans causing bad vavle boxs in the trans causing that buring smell. you do not want to pick up that cost out of pocket. i did:(
You are usually looking at $500-$800 depending on who is going it. For a buring smell I would first look at the condenser fan motor seizing up. If it is running properley then the relay on the compresser may have burnt up in which case you can install a 3in1 hard start kit and see if you can get the compresser to run before spending money to replace it.
Good luck
May need a belt replacement. Belt could have gotten wet and slipped and burned a spot in it. I had one of these and replace a locked up water pump and belt once. I finally got rid of it when the transmission started growling loud it was 32+ years old lady kenmore. see http://www.appliancepartspros.com/ for a diagram.
i would consider getting aanother washer.if it keeps doing this the machine will cost you more than its worth. time to call a repairman in again id guess..
Things wear out! So is life! Sounds like the belt wore and slipped and broke! Is there any power to the washer?
How old is the washer?Sounds old.

If the appliance is 10 years old or more you it may not be advisable to put good money into bad! New appliances are so much more efficient today that they can save you a lot of money in energy!!!! Water,Electric and detergent! And put money back in your pocket! The new appliance will pay for itself in only a few years!
