The easiest way to do it properly would be to use a small mixer, with an adapter cable from the outputs (usually 1/4") to the line-in of the laptop (usually 3.5mm stereo).

A phantom power source, such as a mixer or preamp. A mic cable between the mixer/preamp and mic (XLR). An appropriate cable between the mixer/preamp and the computer. There are also USB adaptors available, but I strongly recommend against that route.

A mobile recording interface is also a good choice, in place of the mixer or preamp.

But John is forgetting one VERY important thing .... Your laptop does not supply the 48 volts 'phantom power' that the microphone needs to work. You have two options: 1) buy a "Phantom Power Supply" from someplace such as and get an appropriate 'XLR female to mini-phone plug adapter' to plug into your computer .... or 2) Buy a USB Preamp that plugs into your laptop and the preamp will supply the 48 volts for the microphone. I use an M-Audio preamp for mine. There are lots of different models of preamps to choose from. Just make sure the description says it is able to supply 'phantom power'.

Once you have the mic plugged into the preamp, and the preamp plugged into a USB port on your computer, then you need to startup your favorite recoding program (I use Sound Studio on my Apple Macintosh) and open the Preferences, or the Audio Control Panel, and select the USB preamp as your sound source.

In other words ... that microphone cannot be plugged directly into your laptop through the factory supplied jack and have it work. It MUST have the 48 volts 'phantom power' to operate.

My gxl 2200 condenser mike is not working for my mix craft 6

The usual procedure when a mic is not working - check that the phantom power (+48V) is working, then try another cable.

If the mic is out of warranty and you're low on bucks, you might have to fix it. Unscrew the base, carefully holding the body sleeve up against the screen. Then carefully slide off the body to expose the PC boards. Check the boards and wires for cracked copper film and bad solder joints. Two tiny Philips screws will allow you to remove the REAR board for full inspection of both. If all is good physically, start checking components with a multimeter. (if you don't know how, StartPage it.) The circuit is similar to the one below, EXCEPT there is a low cut switch on the CAD 2200. If you find a bad component, most of them are pretty cheap to replace.

Is there an internal microphone and if so where is it located trying to record myself i have a compaq presario 2200

Hi, the HP Compaq Presario 2200 PC has no built in or internal microphone. You will have to purchase an external one to record audio. The microphone jack, when viewing the laptop from the front, is located on the left side.

There are small round holes which are jack ports. From the front to the back, the microphone port to plug in a microphone is the second hole back. Here is a manual in case you need more help with your laptop: Click Here.

Hope this helps. If it does, please accept and rate the solution! Contact me with any more questions you may have. Thanks for using FixYa!

I have a gxl 2200 mic and my computer acknowledges the mic but i cant record anything because when i play it back there is no sound

You'll need a phantom power source, like an interface or mixer. Otherwise, the mic is likely in need of repair.

Hp Presario Microphone.

This laptop doesn't have an internal microphone, according to page 6-2 of the manual, which you can get to by clicking here.

Page 5-3 illustrates where to connect an external mic, it's the input with a pink ring around it.

Good luck!

I bought a GXL2200 and i cant hear my vocals.

The GXL 2200 is a condensor microphone. It needs Phantom power to operate, and get the correct levels for recording. Your lexicon interface should have a button/switch that says +48V phantom power, or something similar. This needs to be enabled before the GXL 2200 will work.
