Question about BenQ SP831 Projector

Open Question

Projector keeps blinking initialization light and won't power up lamp

Every component works, but the projector won't finish initialization when switched on by powering the lamp. Lamp can be powered manually by pulling lamp-on signal to ground, but then a lamp error code "fan initialization error" shows. Also forcing power on the fans using fan signals won't help with the error.

I organized a second working SP831 and exchanged each component except the main board and the boot-up hang is still there. Power up sequence: 1) orange-orange-orange downloading firmware, 2) green-dark-dark ready, 3) pressing power button, 4) green blink-dark-dark forever

Pressing the SW3 on the mainboard during initialization phase (green blink) causes the projector to boot up, power lamp and fans and working flawlessly. I have no idea what this SW3 is, I just have to press it every time turning on the projektor for now.

SOURCE: LCD shutting off automatically

Had the same problem with PB2140, during startup the lamp went off and power and lamp leds turned on. This happened after the projector fell down. I read a post there hat mentioned it was probably the power supply so i disassembled the projector. I found out that a small transistor of the power supply was torn away but it was still inside the projector. I found it, put it back and the projector works just fine. Thanks!

SOURCE: Ballast error status - lamp voltage too high

You need to replace the balast as the voltages are buringing the bulb out and this is caused by a balast that is bad. The baslast is what the bulb connects to this has a sensor on it that relays voltages and heat back to the main control unit.

Why does my Mitsubishi XD221U projector click and blink red/green on the power light when turned on?

All projectors run a self diagnosis when you press the power button. This does a kind of "pre flight check". If some component isn't working right then the projector won't fire up.

There's no mystery to these status lights. The answer to what they show is written in the manual. Sorry to be blunt, but if you had bothered to read your manual then you would know that red green flashing power light means that the lamp housing cover isn't closed properly. If it is the status light, then it means that the lamp has gone past its due time for replacement. I only know this because I read the bit in the manual just now about the Status Lights.

It sounds like the lamp is going.
Do you know how many hours of use are reported on the lamp?

Many times these projectors have circuitry to shutdown when they suspect the lamp is near the end of life. Lamp hours vary and usually will go up to and even beyond expectancy, but there is occasions you can receive a bad lamp and have it blow in a matter of hours...not common but it does occur.

I hope this helps,

REPLACED LAMP, LAMP LIGHT STILL BLINKS

If by blink you mean it flashes on then goes out, it could be the lamp ballast. It puts out an initial high voltage to spark/start the lamp, then drops the voltage to keep the lamp lit. It could also be the power supply that feeds the ballast. If it is actually continually blinking, it could still be one of those componets. If there's a warranty, call the vendor for instructions, or you'll probably have to have it serviced/analyzed.

There is no picture when i hit the power. the lamp light blinks once. also the lamp is pretty new.

Just from your description, the problem sounds like a "ballast" problem. That's the circuit that controls the lamp. It initially ignites the lamp and then keeps it burning. Just to be sure, remove the lamp and inspect it. There should be no dark spots on it or bulges, etc. Since you have a new lamp, chances are low that it would be bad--if possible, return to where you got it from and test your projector with a known-good lamp. Classic ballast failure symptoms are just what you described...Is the projector under warranty?? Normally the ballast is over 100 to several hundred dollars depending on make, model, etc...Rick

any of these will result in lamp off and shutdown.
