Computer is dead, need access to hard drive content

Computer is dead. I would like to copy files on my Western Digital (WD400BB) 40GB hard drive using my Windows 7 laptop. What interface and power cables do I need? The hard drive has no jumpers attached, do I need to set a jumper for my laptop to recognize the hard drive?

Your best bet would be to goto ebay and buy a kit which turns your hardrive into an external drive ..... determine what kind of hard drive it is and buy a kit .... ide or sata etc either way you will need to buy the coverter

Not sure how to help without knowing what hardware you're using to read the drives.
But here are a couple of links from WD that may prove helpful...here and here.or here.
I'd look for something similar on the support site for your device.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.

What is the nutral position sinle jumper settings

Jumper Settings: The Western Digital hard drive is factory set for single drive installation. Western Digital hard drives are shipped with a jumper in the neutral storage position (across pins 5 and 3) for future dual drive use. If you are installing the Western Digital hard drive as the only hard drive in your system, leave the jumper in the neutral storage position. Jumpers are not required for single hard drive installations.

How can i unlock my passport without formatting it

Hello,

This is by design. Western Digital and other manufacturers who offer encryption(locking) do this to prevent others from accessing your data without your permission.

If you wish to format the drive, you will have to unlock it, copy the files off to another drive or computer then reformat and copy the files back.

Unfortunately they do not have an option to unlock permanently without formatting.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Above is the link to set the jumper on the 40GB to Slave.
Also, before it boots, try to get into the BIOS setting and make sure your compter can see both drives. If not, double check jumper settings for both drives. Turn off compter and change settings.

When computer can see both drives in BIOS, save it and let the compter continue to boot.

Hope this helps.
