Paper jam

Does it sound like the motor is spinning? or does it sound like the motor is bound up? I ask because if it sounds like the motor is spinning, then chances are good you stripped a plastic gear somewhere in the drive system that feeds the steel shredder. I just pulled apart one of these and saw that the motor has a steel gear on it. that steel motor gear meets with a plastic gear, and then the plastic gear meets with steel gears attached to, and which spin the shredder. So if you ever bind the shredder with too much paper, the steel motor gear will grind the teeth right off the plastic gear and it won't spin anymore. If your motor sounds like it's bound, then the good news is that the gears aren't stripped. You'll have to take the shredder apart so you can remove the paper causing the problem. Of course unplug it first before opening it up. They are not overly complex but just remember where the screws goes so you put them back in the right holes.

I have a ge monogram trash compactor the ram is stuck in down position, how can we raise the ram?

Start your investigation by removing the bottom plate. There should be a belt or chain going around 3 gears. Mine has 2 metal and one plastic. The 2 metal ones are on the ends of the rods that the ram runs up and down on. The plastic one is on top of a big speed reduction gear that is turned by the motor gear. Don't pinch your fingers but see if you can turn the big gear by hand. All gears should turn. If not check each gear for broken teeth, or bad bearing & races under the 2 rod gears.
Be sure to check t
he threaded hard plastic nut that drives the screw that powers the scissors up and down. This is the part that usually fails.

I've often heard that some Pontiac engines (vintage 1980-2002) used a plastic or quiet type timing chain and sprockets. Owners of these vehicles I have talked to said that this kept them from buying...

Hi,
No one has ever used plastic gears and chains. Some of the older big block models used timing gears with nylon teeth. This is true for all manufacturers and I believe ford still uses them in some engines. The disavantage to the nylon teeth was they would wear out somewhat faster, usually in the 80K-100K range. The pontiac V6 3800 engine has had steel toothed gears from 1986 to present and considered the most reliable V6 model ever built. While it is rare to actually break a timing chain under normal driving conditions, it does happen in race applications. However, when teeth and chains wear out, rough running and high fuel consumption due to poor mechanical time is the result. 350 GM engines were recommended to replace timing sets at 80K miles for optimum performance and were notorious for chewing off teeth. The aftermarket high performance replacement sets were made of cast iron or tempered steel. Double roller chain types, while noisier, lasted longer with fewer timing relasted issues. I had a 1979 firebird for 17 years with 200K+ miles on it and it still ran like a champ, so like anything else, proper maintenance and good driving habits have a huge affect on engine component life....Mike

Hi my dryer is not heating, when I pressed the start button it sparked around the control knob and tripped the breaker and now it won't heat. could it be a fuse or the heating element themodel # is ...

Look at the start button first it might have burn out in the back or look at the capasitor on the motor, other wise it will more than likely be the timer or the motor.

Hoow to set up the timing belt

What do you mean by drive belt. If your talking about the serpentine belt, it should have an auto tensioner. Same goes for the timing belt. There is no adjustment. If the belt is loose then it needs to be replaced.
Replacing timing belt,Sienna 1998:
1.Disconnect battery (-) cable and plastic wiper washer cowl assembly
2.Remove spark plugs and put all wirings, cables out of the way
3.Drain coolant (cold) and remove upper hose
4.remove front right tire and wheel plastic fender apron
5.jack up engine under oil pan with rubber, towel or wood slightly
6.remove right engine support rod and its bracket
7.remove all drive belts.Examine condition;Label if re-using
8.remove plastic upper timing belt cover & gasket
9.remove crankshaft pulley bolt-use the ff. methods: a.air impact wrench or Toyota Special service tool-best b.chain wrench on pulley then breaker bar/socket on bolt-good c.open fly wheel cover, jam screwdriver on gear teeth then unbolt-tough d.breaker bar/socket on bolt, jam bar tip on floor, lower car then "start" engine -smart
10.remove pulley by hand or use carefully 2 prybars then remove plastic lower T.B.coverand gasket
11.reinstall bolt and turn engine clockwise to align timing marks:one on each camshaft sprocket and one on the crankshaft sprocket
12.remove T.B. tensioner spring-2 bolts loosen alternately then keep upright
13.remove crankshaft sprocket guard then the sprocket, then the belt.
14.Examine belt condition for damage and correct cause of damage if any
15.remove idler T.B.pulleys & check for smooth operation/contamination/leak
16.check all oil seals, water pump leaks, etc
17.Check T.B.tensioner spring for oil leak and tension by pressing push rod against hard object-there should be no movement or leak
18.Compress push rod using vise, align rod hole with outer hole then insert small nail, pin or wire to keep it there then reinstall along with other parts removed
19.Install T.B.carefully.No twist, stretch,prying ,oil, moisture, bending
20.Handturn engine 720 deg.clockwise, feel for resistance , and then see timing marks still re-align
21.Reinstall plastic covers and gaskets, drive belts.etc in reverse order 21.

Hope this helps.

My husband opened the freezer and it was thawing. I looked at the control panel and the freezer was at 21' and the top section was at 58'. Why? I couldn't reset it.

Apparently, one can't put something tall in front of the ventilation system as it blocks the cold air from coming in. I moved the grapefruit juice container away from the vents and set the thermostat on turbo and this morning it was very cool and working just fine. Sometimes a little common sense goes a long way. Thanks for the shoulder to lean on. Sherrill
