Question about Lexmark X6170 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

It started with error 0502; now it won't come back on.

After troubleshooting and taking plug from back of printer when I replugged it in I have no power at all.

This appears to be a repost of the same problem, but with a little more information. The AIO not coming on at all may be a simple matter of a short in the electrical cord, unrelated to the 0502 error. Try moving, twisting, and laying the cord in different positions to test that theory.

To restate my solution for the other post by you, the power supply may have gone bad. If I remember correctly, it comes out of the base of the printer easily - held in by a clipping mechanism. Pull it out and take it along with the power cord to an electronics store (Radio Shack if nothing else). They should be willing to test it for you using a multimeter if they are not busy.

Printer won't print--error 0502. What is this and how do I fix?

After months of use, your printer might get the habit of stopping in the middle of a page and showing "Hardware Error 0502" on the LCD display. If you leave the printer alone for a while, it might start printing again. Then again, it might not. Pretty annoying.

The Lexmark support site will let you power off, remove the power cord for 30 seconds, take out the cartridges and fiddle with some encoder strip. This whole procedure might take you up to 30 minutes and it will not help (been there, done that).

On the multi function machine seems to be a coating on the metal rod that the cartridges travel on. Just wipe this rod with a kleenex and the problem seems to go away. Somehow it presents a drag on the cartridges and causes an error.

Clean that with a paper towel. The towel will be black from the ink residue, but you will be able to print again.

This works! Clean the ****** with a paper towel (another page talks about re-lubricating the thing, but that was not necessary in my case). The towel will be black (ink residu, presumably), but there you go printing to your heart's desire again

What is an error message 502?

The 0502 error can be caused by four different issues:
  • A contaminated encoder strip
  • An unseated encoder strip
  • A faulty black/photo cartridge
  • A faulty color cartridge
If the printer is still under warranty, it is best to replace it, as error 502 is usually recurrent. Otherwise, please follow the link below to the Lexmark website for a detailed troubleshooting guide for error 502:

I hope this helps.

Hardware error 0502 and error code 50c

The encoder strip is most likely the problem. Unplug the power from the printer. Open the front cover and move the cartridge carrier to the center. You should see a white ribbon cable, a thin plastic strip and a black belt with teeth.

The thin plastic strip is the encoder strip. It rides in a sensor on the back of the cartridge carrier that you will not be able to see. Reach in with the first finger of either hand and carefully strum the strip as if playing a guitar.

The strip will need to be lowered slightly and brought towards you slightly. Please be careful not to break the strip or your printer will not function. Once you believe the strip is set correctly, plug the power back and try printing the self test. If it slams to the left again, the strip is not yet set correctly.

If you cannot repair the strip, please let us know so that we can assist you further.

Please Note: Fixing the encoder strip is a delicate procedure. During the troubleshooting, if the strip breaks, you will not be able to use the printer. Lexmark will replace the printer, only if it is under warranty.
