The drive may be physically damaged if you have any important data on it, you might need hard disk data recovery professionals.
Please do not try to experiment on the hard drive if you have limited knowledge of the hard disk.

Remember to have back up always.

Compaq Presario pops up a system boot menu everytime at startup.

This comes up mostly when it requires a BIOS save. Try that. If that does not help, sometimes setting the default settings and saving will help.

When a compaq armada m700 laptop is showing non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready

this usually happens when the computer is trying to boot from a disk that isn't a valid boot disk.

if you have a floppy drive plugged into the multibay and a floppy in the drive, try removing the floppy.
if there is no floppy involved, try to boot from your system recovery disks, as it's likely that the boot record on the hard drive will need repaired. your system recovery disks should walk you through the process.

If a drive is dropped, (freeagent) Can it be repaired? If yes. How much would this repair cost? Item fell about 2 feet from desk to floor.

Remove the hard drive and put it into an enclosure.Plug it into another computer as a slave. Then you can copy your files on it.
If it shows up in 'my computer' as a drive letter(like E: drive) but you can't access it,you can recover data on it with data recovery program to avoid losing your data.I have succeed recover data from crashed hard drive with Tenorshare data recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage, system sabotage, virus attack etc.You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm After you recover your data, you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.
If the hard drive can't be detected, you can try this way.Put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in the freezer for overnight. Then while it's still cold plug it into the computer and you may be able to view it in 'my computer'. And if needed, run the recovery program to recover your data on it.
If it fails, you will have to go to a recovery office where supply data recovery service but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money and whether they can recover data is not guaranteed.

Windows 7 laptop won't boot to OS , only has a black screen with a blinking cursor

Insert your system recovery disc to repair your startup.

1. Change your Bios to boot from disc:
When your computer powers on, hit F2 (on some computers, F8 on others). Use your arrow keys and move to the right to your BOOT option. Hit the down arrow until you select your CD/DVD drive. Look at the bottom of your screen, and it should say to change the option hit F7 or F8. Use the specified keys, and move your CD/DVD drive above your hard-drive. Save your settings.

2. Boot from your disc. Insert your system recovery disc and restart your computer. Let the recovery disc load. If the option comes up to hit any button to boot from CD/DVD, then hit any button. Once it loads, it should come to a spot where it wants your language. Select your language, then select the option "Startup Repair". Click on it, and let it repair the startup. If it automatically starts correcting your startup then great! If not, then select your operating system from the list and click the Repair Startup option. Restart your computer, and hopefully it will boot from your hard-drive correctly.

Hope this works.

P.S. If it continues to boot from your recovery disc, then using the same method in step 1, go to your bios, and move your CD/DVD drive below your hard-drive.

I accidentally knocked our external drive to the floor pretty hard. Now it won't even work. How can I get the files out of it and into my computer?

Well I recently did this to an external drive of my own and it didn't even hit the floor hard but it was enough. I sent it off to a data recovery place and try as they could they were not able to recover any of the files. This doesn't mean that they won't be successful with yours though. It will cost you from $250.00 to $1200 to have a chance of recoverying the files. They will give you a free estimate if you send your drive in . I'd recommend one of the companies listed here. http://support.wdc.com/recovery/index.asp?lang=en&selregion=americas

Western Digital WD 1200VE; 120 GB external hard drive unable to boot

You need to send it to a data recovery house like Drive Savers. The prices range from 500 to 3000 USD for data recovery and they can't guarantee 100 percent success. The platters need to be removed in a clean room and placed in a unit to read the data. They then copy the data to another drive or to optical disks. Unfortunately when the drive hit the floor the drive sustained physical damage hence not starting up.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Cheers.

Help!Help with external hard drive?

Your disk drive is a delicate instrument, it will react negatively if dropped on the floor.
However what you might try all be it rather radical in this age of micro fine technology is. take a deep breath and sit down. Take the disk drive in your left hand with the edge of the drive that struck the floor facing away, make a fist with your right hand and strike the opposite edge with with almost equal force.
The reason behind this is simply that when you dropped your drive on the floor the heads got jammed either into the disk spool or out side of it,
If you have to pay $300 for disk recovery you cannot be doing much worse than trying this before you have to.

if you dropped your hard-drive and it stopped functioning - high chances that the drive has a physical crash. Best suggestion will be to contact a professional data recovery team if the data on the drive is really important (Coz, they charge a bomb for the recovery) Suggestion would be to talk to drivesavers.com
