Question about Canon EOS-50E 35mm SLR Camera

1 Answer

Mirror lock up

When I first turn on my EOS 50E the mirror locks up when I try to take first picture. The battery indicator flashes and shows empty but when I press shutter again it releases the mirror and the battery (New) shows full charge.

Turn it off the green rectangle setting and see if it still does this (for example, turn the mode dial to P instead). If it stops doing that, then the flash up shaft in the top cover is bent. If it still does, then either the phase switch on the bottom of the mirror box needs to be cleaned, the shaft the phase switch gear is on is broken (common) or the shutter has a problem.

No fault of the camera it's has been programed in custom function #9 for mirror lock up. In mirror kock up mode first click of the shutter button locks up the mirror the second takes the shot and lowers the mirror. Mirror lock up is most often used while tripod mounted for extreme close ups or macro photography and also where a large telephoto lens is used. Mirror lock up is for reducing camera vibration during exposure. You can go into your custom function menu scroll to #9 and turn this off and all will return to normal.

Canon Rebel XT Does NOT Take Pictures (AF & Exposure seem OK)

I have the SAME problem. I wrote to Canon and they told me to shut off the camera, take the battery out and wait 20 MINUTES! I can't WAIT that long, especially when I'm WORKING! I rely on this camera to work! Its annoying! Then they said if that doesn't work, to SEND IT IN and if its under warranty, they'll fix it for free.. if its NOT, then I have to pay for it. BUt the "technical team" will make the decision.

Canon EOS300D Mirror Problem

Never, never touch the inside of the camera with your finger! Beside all other bad things this will void your warranty if discovered.
Your camera is either defective and needs service, or you have selected the "Mirror lock up" feature which is intended for cleaning the sensor (with special tool)

Mirror Locked in Up Position

When you say you put in a new roll of film, did the camera advance the film with the mirror locked up? Have you tried triggering the shutter few times to release the mirror? If that doesn't work, open the back of the camera. Turn the film take up spool in one direction...that should release the mirror down. Turn it also in the opposite direction. If that doesn't work, reach inside the lens mount opening and pull the mirror (very very gently) down. Don't force it down if it doesn't want to go. Sometimes that releases the mechanism that freezes from sitting idle for too long. It is always a good idea to take the camera out and triger few frames every couple of months to keep things lubricated. Let me know if that fixes it. AJ.
