Two possibilities: Either the fan is really dusty or the bearings are worn out. The easiest way to clean the fan is to get a can of compressed air and blow the dust off. If it doesn't help you might need to replace your fan...

I have an old circular floor fan, that hums and wont come on, then suddenly it comes on?

You need to clean it and oil the bushings. When this doesn't solve the problem, change the start capacitor. If it continues to hum or make noise, replace the bushings. A repair technician may be helpful.

Humming noise when turned on

The montherboard doesn't have anything that would make a humming noise. In all likelyhood it's the fan that sits on top of teh processor. It could be normal, but might need to be replaced or cleaned.

Fan won't run at all.

If you plug it in and turn it on, does it "humm".
If so, it is getting power. It could be the blades are stuck on something: do they turn by hand?
The motor could be dirty also, is the blade hard to turn?
It can be repaired by Vornado, or you can dis-assemble the motor and clean it.

The ceiling fan motor hums

Hi there,

Over there years, dust can accumulate inside the motor, getting under the contacts that transfer electricity to the motor. The motor needs a minimum amount of energy to work. When the contacts can no longer transfer that amount it will sit there and hum.

Buy some 'canned air'. It's used to clean keyboards and computers. It works great to blow out dust from electronics and motors.

The age of the fan may also be a problem. But if you can spin it by hand, it's likely the dust is the problem.

Best regards,
Mike

Usually if the fan and heatsink is not accessable from the bottom of the laptop behind a vent then the fan is accessed by removing the keyboard.
