This error is sometimes an indication that the hard drive may be failing.Complete the following steps to check the integrity of your hard drive. If you are unable to get to the Advanced Boot Option menu using the F8 key, you will need to obtain a Windows Vista disc.
1.Restart your computer, tapping on the F8 button until you reach the Advanced Boot Options menu.
2.Select Safe Mode with command prompt.
3.Type chkdsk /r (there is a space between k and /)

Computer won't boot stuck in Error RecoveryScreen won't go any further

You should be able to do a clean install of Windows. Just insert the installation disc and press any key when indicated. Optical drive needs to be the first boot option. Go into BIOS and change it is not.
As for disc, you have to use the same Windows version as indicated on the MS Product Key sticker, because of the serial number.

Method 1:

I would suggest you to check of you can open the system recovery options without using the installation disc- a. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer using the computer's power button. b. Do one of the following: If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer. If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to repair, and then press and hold F8. c. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer, and then press Enter. If Repair your computer isn't listed as an option, then your computer doesn't include preinstalled recovery options, or your network administrator has turned them off.

c. Select a keyboard layout, and then click next.

d. On the System Recovery Options menu, click a tool to open it. Refer the below link for more information -

If the repair option is not present in the advanced boot options and you are unable to perform the recovery then in that that case there are no options other than getting the installation disc or contacting Hp for assistance.

The error code you are getting while restoring to factory settings is some error associated with the hardware for Hp computer. You might need a tool or some hardware update from HP to get over the error.

A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Step 1: Shut down your PC completely.
Step 2: Turn on the Power button.
Step 3: As soon as you turn it on start hitting the F8 key on your keyboard until you get to a black screen called "Windows Advanced option". (If you don't get to that screen but you end up reaching the Blue/Black screen than that means you have delayed in hitting the F8 key. start again from step 1.)
Step 4: As soon as you reach "Windows Advanced option" use your down arrow keys to choose an option called "Last know good configuration".
Step 5: Select that and HIT ENTER

if this fails then try repairing it from recovery console.
  • Insert the OS CD and boot from CD.
  • During Startup, select Recovery Console from the startup options menu.
  • When you are prompted, type the Administrator password.
  • Type the Command chkdsk /r

Laptop was working fine. Yesterday, it shuts down and now won't start. It would go to the black screen where the ''Microsoft Corporation'' was at the bottom with the sliding green line. Would not go past...

If you have any windows xp bootable cd use that to fix the problem by running the command chkdsk /r/f or you can try with this just restart the system in safe mode with command prompt and type the command like c:\windows>chkdsk
And
c:\windows>chkdsk /r/f
