Question about HEWLETT-PACKARD HP EliteBook 8540p WH253UA Notebook
The left mouse key is not fully returning to its natural position. Jiggling it around a little can get it to return fully but it is getting worse slowly. The functions are basically ok but the action of the key makes it difficult. It seems like a mechanical problem as opposed to a software type problem?? Any ideas?? Thanks
If it was me, I'd get a can of compressed air and try to blow it out underneath the key first. A soft bristled brush, pushed gently under the key might dislodge something. It sounds like you may have something spilled on your keyboard, so, while you computer is off, unplugged and the battery removed, I'd dip a soft bristled brush in some isopropyl alcohol and run it under the key. I'd repeat this a few times, and leave the laptop off for a few minutes until the alcohol has dried completely to avoid the possibility of a short from being wet.

Testimonial: "Thank you very much for taking the time to advise what sounds like a very logical approach. In looking to gain access under the edge of the key I found that the actual hard key has a rubber top cover to it and it is pressed onto the actual key and retained via a ridge around the lower perimeter of this rubber pad when it is pressed down onto the key. Well I have just solved the problem by removing the rubber pad completely and the key is performing normally as it should. Obviously what was happening was that the rubber edges of the pad were slightly impinging on the normal operation of the key. I have not put the pad back on as the key is perfect now but at sometime in the future I can reinstall it and see what happens.Hopefully this information may help someone else down the track. Regards Wayne"
