(1) Your reconditioned HDD may be a bad one; or
(2) the Toshiba 4200, 4300 series hard drive compartment and bracket (caddy) is NOT an exact fit: there's enough room in there for the HDD to miss the connector - up OR down! Happens all the time! If you're sure the HDD you bought is a good one, remove it and reconnect it!

Make sure you can change it in the BIOS to auto detect, or do it manually using the info on the back of the HDD, like number of sectors, and so on. the problem is that you might need to change the jumper on the back. if it is going to be the primary make sure the jumper reflects that AND the position on the IDE ribon aslo, *the primary on the last connection, secondary on the midway connection on the grey pasta looking cord. :)
