Unfortunately, not only we want something to be working properly (a reasonable demand), but we want the programming to be done at the speed of light and then some. In this case, our client went ahead with the installation of all the Mother Board software at a speed predetermined by the manufacturer of the Mothe Board and it could have been a hot day or the air conditioner did not work well enough. So, the source of the signal counted some zero's (0's) as ones (1's) or vice verse. Mt. Murphy is always around to put his fingers into it and those few bits, caused a series of errors, whcih as the end came out as the absence of the sound. It is not that much, except that he may have to go home and get the manual (or get on the internet and dowload that portion of the instruction manual). This by the way has been checked in an Environmental Chamber and it was decided at the factory, that they could strech the heat or the current, just a smigeon. But there is nothing absolute in this world....

The sound driver is normally on the Mother Board CD. Without the CD and
if you really need the computer and cannot do without it, the only way
is that you do download a copy of it. Remember one thing that may be
the cause of not installing. The CD has the drivers in their natural
length, but when you go to the website, many companies do "zip" each
file in the folder. So, before you say that it will not install, why
don't you look at the ending letters. A dot zip means that you
have to unzip it. As I think about it I would make the percent about 75
-80 % that the file is "zipped". We used to have a short program called
"winzipXX.com" which not only it unzipped the files, but put them on
order and prepared them for installation. May be we needed to give it a
kick once in a while, but this program worked rather well. So, the
company decided, instead of giving it for free, they put a price tag of
US $ 39.99 per annum, if they are in a good mood. Otherwise it goes to
US $ 49.99 per annum. I had a copy on my desktop, but the owner call me
and asked me if I wanted to keep it, then he turned it off because I
failed to get in touch with him. I don't know what are the other
"freeware" that have a product that "unizips". Almost all the programs
of today they do "self-unzip" and I had no need of the "winzip". But,
if you are downloading from HP, you better have the little bugger. So,
I suggest that you check to see if you have a "dot zip" file or just a
plain "ISO" (ImageSystemSomething). The ISO comes zipped, but it is
read just as it is. I like the ISO because it avoids the use of the
torrent system, which makes my head spin. Good luck to you... My name
