Question about GE Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal GFC520F
Nine-year old unit. No prior problems. Started making new loud sound, didn't sound normal or good. Still gets power and spins. Unplugged unit. No foreign objects detected. Turntable spins freely. Noticed that one of the two rivets in the turntable (that hold the two shredding blades) is loose. The other is tight and firm. Am wondering if the new noise is caused by the rivet shaking loose and, if so, is this something worth fixing or, given the unit's age, if it just makes sense to buy a new one. Thank you!

If the turntable tray is positioned and seated properly, it is probably a failing turntable motor. You can find usually helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your base model number (without the suffix) here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383 If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety and disassembly info at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

GE refrigs have a variable speed evaporator fan motor that is controlled by a computer board on the back of the refrig. now the noise you are hearing is most likely the fan motor ramping up and down in speed (some of my customers say it sounds like a ghost). if its a continuous ramping up and down then the speed cotroller on the board is bad and must be replaced. if its just an occasional sound then thats normal and nothing to worry over.
Btw the reason the noise stops when the door opens is because the fan shuts off when you open the door.

Many thanks to e3enigma above! I removed the synch motor under the turntable; all other microwave functions work fine and the grinding noise is gone, hooray! A trip to the appliance parts store tomorrow for a replacement synchronous motor and all should be well. Thanks again!

Or, you have coins in your pump casing. Look on the back of the washer, and unscrew the circular port in the bottom right corner. (Keep an 8x13 baking pan underneath, water will escape once you open the chamber). Remove and change/objects from the chamber and replace the port. You should be good to go. This is actually very common for this model washer.
