Question about Sony KDL-52W5500 52 inch Multi-System Full HDTV 1080p LCD TV

1 Answer

Sony 52w5500 No image, No backlights, 13 and 14 blinks

Hi, my 4 years old TV just "died" When I'm starting it, I've got sound, but no backlights, and no image (T-Con) What would be the reason for loosing the baclights (balancer/inverter) and the image (T-Con) the same day ??? The only common point would be the Powser Supply board ? or Main board ? Any suggestion ? Thx

These blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit stage inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power led, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating, to many popular brand TVs and other devices. Not common but electronics are electronics , we can have failures right out of the box. Generally Sony is reliable and I must say that you should not have to worry about cost , Is it not under warranty - its only 4 months old !!

I would suspect one or more of the miniature flourescent backlight lamps. One way to confirm this would be to power up the set with a grayscale image at 40 to 60 IRE. If one or more lamps is failing to light, a slightly darker horizontal area in the grayscale will give it away. Unfortunately, Sony will not supply any of the backlight components apart from a new LCD panel. Sorry.

So before ordering that expensive main board, you may want to read below and check the T-CON board also:
This is from SONY's how to troubleshoot T-CON board/LCD panel problem:
PM me if you wnat me to send you the whole artical, budmrtn@aol.com

Troubleshooting a "DEAD" TCON

Many of the Sony television models over the last few years will detect a TCON that has completely failed. The

communications data between the video process circuits and the TCON will cease to communicate if the TCON

fails completely. This will cause the television to shut down and display a diagnostics code indicating a failure of the TCON. Not all chassis designs have this feature and it is not found on older models.

The typical scenario when this failure arises is for the technician to bring a video process board to the repair

location. It is usually safe to assume that the problem lies on the TCON board if the replacement video board

does not remedy the problem since it is highly unlikely that a replacement board with the same failure was

received.

One trick to check most TCONS for functionality is to loosen the LVDS connector at the TCON (as shown In

Figure 3) while the unit is turned on. Handle the LVDS connector with care and be certain to fully release the lock

tabs. Gently rock the cable in and out of the connector while observing the screen for any response. Depending

on the chassis, the symptoms of the screen may be gentle white flashes, intermittent colored lines, or a screen

full of random patterns. The idea at this point is to provoke some kind of response on the screen. TCON boards that have failed will not usually generate any type of response on the screen.

Another helpful procedure is to rapidly heat and/or cool the TCON with hot air devices or circuit coolant and
watch for patterns to appear on the screen."

SOURCE: Sony KDL-52w5500 black screen 13 blink then 14 blink

You have a couple of problems if you are sure there are 2 different blink codes. 13 blinks indicates a backlight balancer error which would explain your no light condition. 14 blinks would be a TCON board error which is the driver board for the LCD screen. Either error would keep the screen black.

Testimonial: "Thx for the answer would both give a black screen or one could give a black image ? What I mean is that right now, no light is coming from the TV, so would resolving the TCON or the Balancer problem give me some light but with a black image ?"

Hi,

There are a number reasons why this might happen:
  • The backlight has gone (Find a dark place and shine a torch into the screen and see if you can see an image in the background, if you see an image then the backlight has gone) - Needs a new backlight (Engineer to remove and fit) or have a new panel fitted.
  • The panel has died - Need a new panel
  • A cable has worked itself loose or is broken
  • The inverter has gone - Need new inverter
  • The driver board is faulty
Thanks

Sony Trinitron KV-29RS22 Blinks

Sounds like the high voltage is marginal.
My experiance is to not put money into a TV that is over ten years old. TVs stress out their electronic components worse than almost any other electronic product. After 10 years, there are so many parts that are ready to fail that your are probably wasting your money trying to get any more life out of it.
Another option is to wholesale replace the main board by sending it to Module Exchange at 972-298-1212,
or PTS Electronics 800-844-7871 ptscorp.com.
Be careful on buying a new one though. Often times, these new technology ones are much worse. Always Google the model number of the set you intend to buy and add the word 'repair' or 'complaint' to see if it is one of the many models that are customer service nightmares being produced by even the most reputable companies today.
Hope ya fix it!
