If this is a crt type tv, you might having a high voltage circuitry faulty, either shorted diode, shorted HOT, or shorted flyback.

In general you have an overloading or short.

I have a flat screen plasma TV. We were watchin a movie & I hit pause on the DVD player & the TV turned off. We have unplugged it & plugged it back in, it clicks & the standby light blinks 5 times.

These blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
Search the site by type in the brand name to your device, in the "Search box at the top right of the display window".

If you have any one of these LG Models TV below, and all of a sudden, the screen lights for only a few seconds, then goes into standby with a clicking noise. [Stuck in standby] When you try to switch it on, it tries but then just clicks and goes back to standby? In this video, I show you the components that goes bad, and the culprit that causes it all. The power supply board has already been bought from Ebay, but I'm still selling the voltage regulator that is dang near impossible to find on ebay, as well as the REPAIR KIT for this power Supply Board. Board model number EAY60968801. With any one of these PCB # EAX61392501/7, EAX61392501/10, EAX61392501/11, or EAX61392501/12 Please Make sure that you've already gone through the process of troubleshooting and testing your tv's power supply board before making any purchases.. I recommend that you get a tv tech to check it out, because every tv is different. Remember, the component, and the repair kit will only repair power supply model (EAY60968801) with the appropriate PCB numbers. You buy at your own risk

When i turn it on it clicks and the goes right back off

New set?
If you're turning almost any TV on by the manual power switch on it, thats Standby mode.
The next step it's waiting for is the ON command from the remote control.
There are two main methods remotes use to go to ON from Standby:
Press the Power button for both on and off commands
Press any 1-10 (or 1-0) button for on, press power button for off.

TV turned off by itself and now it won't turn back on

If the tv has nothing happening at all when you try and turn it back on including any noise, your power supply is broken. If it is still trying to turn on or does make noise, an internal component has come loose or been knocked off, most likely to your picture tube.

Tv switches itself off to standby

Sounds like a fault in the remote receive circuit or power supply. ambient electrical noise is getting into the circuit somehere. As it is not a new TV, I would suspect power supply capacitors, as they dry out with heat and age. Probably best to take it to a repair shop that gives free estimates/quotes, as there may be more on its way out and this is the first symptom.

GE 31GT740 clicks off and on

Dead, led flashing red/green at first, then going to red standby
Replace C604 (1000uF, 16v) elec. cap. It is in the decoupling circuit for the 5 volt supply
Reverts to standby from switch on via TV or Video
No 5v rail because FET MTP3055 o/c. (BUZ71 will do nicely)
Goes straight to standby, after a quick burst of power
Replaced R952 (39K), had gone slightly high

Generally, if a Plasma Tv is not coming out of standby, it means either the main board is faulty (most likely case) or Power Supply Board is not giving enough power to Main board to switch on the TV. In your case, I think it's the main board (aka Motherboard). Sometimes it's hard to tell to whether ceremic fuses are blown off by looking at them, so it's best to check with a multimeter. Check the fuses in the PSU and also whether it's outputing correct voltages. Also, can you hear a clicking noise right after you've switched on the TV or pressed the power button in the remote to make the Tv go from standby to ON. A clicking noise means one of the boards is shorting out. In your case, I don't think you'd hear a shorting out clicking noise, and I think replacing the Main board will get you out of standby.
