I have a modem arris cm450b, i bought splitter to use 2 cables but the the cable connected to my sons computr isn't working

That is not the right way to do it. Connect one computer to the cable modem using an USB A/B cable from the USB port on the modem to an available USB port on the computer and connect the second computer to the modem Ethernet port-to-Ethernet port using an Ethernet cable (probably the modem came with one Ethernet cable).

Hope this helps.

I have a dynex 8 port gigabit ethernet switch. I see 8 ports but do not see a port to put the incoming ethernet wire. I put it in port 1 and put an outbound in port 2 but cannot connect to the internet.

Hello
Connections should go.Main internet to router,then from router to dynex switch,then to pc or pcs.
There is no main internet ethernet port, as this is just a switch.You need a Router before the dynex switch.

Telephone wall-plate <---- 4-strand telephone-cord ---> telephone-port in modem

AC power from wall-plate to modem.

LAN port #1 <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop/laptop computer #1.
LAN port #2 <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop/laptop computer #2.
LAN port #3 <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop/laptop computer #3.
LAN port #4 <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop/laptop computer #4.

Configure the router's wireless adapter:
* set a SSID
* set an encryption-level, e.g., 'WPA'
* set a network password

Use the SSID/password to configure your wireless devices (iPod Touch, iPad, XBOX 360, etc.)

Ethernet not appearing on xp pro

Check the BIOS to make sure the LAN/Ethernet port is enabled. Run the Add Hardware wizard in Windows to see if it can find the port. If it can't, then the port is bad. You have 2 options; replace the motherboard or buy a $10 ethernet card and install it.

Just to clarify, you have 4 computers connected to two ethernet switches. Two computers are connecteh to each ethernet switch and a network cable connecting the two ethernet switches 400ft apart.

For all the computers to communicate with each other, they all need to be in the same workgroup "name".
The cable joining the two ethernet switches need to be connected to the RJ45 UPLINK port on both the ethernet switches, and the uplink port may have a switch (the switch allows it to function as a standard RJ45 port or a RJ45 uplink port).
If there is no RJ45 uplink ports on the ethernet switches then a cross over network cable is needed to connect the ethernet switches together.

Replacing an ethernet port on my hp pavillion

Your ethernet port is probably integrated into the motherboard of your computer. Have you tried reinstalling the driver for the ethernet?

If the port is truly bad, my suggestion would be to purchase an ethernet card or NIC (Network Interface Card) and have it installed. You can get them for $15 to $25 at any big box computer store.
