You are most likely experiencing an overheating problem. If your computer is overclocked, you may want to return it to the normal clock speed for the CPU installed (this would be in the BIOS settings). Check all of the ventilation slots on the computer case to ensure the are not blocked. You might even want to try a can of compressed air to blow out any dust that may have built up. Focus around the power supply fan and any other openings on the case.
If this does not fix the problem, then the wireless card itself may be deteriorating so that once it is hot, it fails, thus causing the loss of connectivity and explaining the lock up when you try to open network connections. If the wireless is built-in to the computer, then you'll have to disable it in the BIOS and add a new wireless card to regain wireless connectivity. If it is a card, then replace the card.

Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections Tab>LAN Setting tab -- Make sure the Automatically detect settings is selected and nothing else. Select OK to back out of all windows and retry your connection.
