Help At the base of the atomizing tip where it goes into the manifold, I have a flame that wont go out. I have inspected both the tip and the long tube for cracks but can find nothing. I am baffled as to whats causing this.

I sometimes have this and I think it is just a bit of fuel left from a tiny leak. If it doesn't go out in a minute or two I pull out the tank and blow out the tip flame. With the valve off there is no more fuel going through.

The pilot light ignites but goes out when the button is released, I have held it down for over a minute, can you help

The pilot light works with a safety cut out device should the flame ever get blown out. The device cuts the gas supply to stop accidents. If you look where the pilot light burns you will see a small metal looking tip in the flame, this is the device. It is full of liquid:that expands when the flame keeps it hot. The other end applies pressure on the cut out switch. The liquid within can fail. It is very easy to follow the tube to the cutout switch, unscrew the whole tube assembly and take to a hardware store for a cheap replqcement that you screw back in. Any excess tube carefully wind up in a coil, do not bend sharply as liquid will excape (liquid usually oil based) Once refitted ignite per instructions for your device. Happy fixing.

Clean air intake located on bottom of heater using compressed air or feather duster. Use auto inspection mirror and flashlight to see under the unit.

Age of water heater appear on label on side of tank.
Look for serial number.
Powerflex is American water heater product (AO Smith)
First 2 digits of serial number is year of manufacturer, digits 3-4 are week during year.

Flame of water heater does not light up

You need to replace you thermocouple its the tiny copper in color probe going into water heater. This componet works of milli volts and keeps the pilot lit when this goes bad the pilot goes out. Heres what you need to do shut gas off take all fittings off gas valve thats the thing with the knob on it to set water temp. pull out manifold and remove thermocouple by pulling at the base straight out. You can buy replacement thermocouples at your nearest hardware store.

Will lite but goes out within a min

Make sure the thermocouples not fully engulfed in flame, it needs to be on;y at the tip end as they operate via temperature differential acrosss the thermocouples surface, if the whole thinfs one temp it drops out electrically(makes 30 millivolts) and the electromagnetically operated pilot safety valve closes, thus stopping the main burners operatin as its sensing no pilot exists. try a new thermocouple, about 15 bucks, and set it as described in pilot flame, if that wont do it, the gas valves bad.

Bryant Gas Heater goes into ignition lockout daily.

First of all try cleaning all the components inside the burner assembly, including the ignitor and the flame sensor.Try cleaning flame sensor well with steel wool or sandpaper. after cleaning check out.if the problem is same then, check out whether the manual gas shut-off valve is on and not off, and the gas lines leading up to and inside the unit all seem unmoved and undamaged. If everything is proper then remove cover from burner compartment and re-try. If ignition is successful, check for leaky ignitor gasket, or look CLOSELY for webbing inside far-right burner. It can also be caused if there is low gas presure, or a bad gas valve. That has to be checked.
To remove and replace/check the burner .follow this instructions

(These instructions apply to an upflow installation. Turn 90* in appropriate direction for horizontal orientation. Only perform these steps if you are sufficiently qualified.) Turn off power & gas supply, loosen nearest union BETWEEN gas **** & furnace. Remove wires from gas control, noting where each one belongs. Remove cover from burner enclosure & remove 2 screws securing manifold to enclosure. Lift upward/outward to disengage manifold from enclosure & carefully move aside. Remove screws securing burner set, remove burners. Inspect burners for debris in passage and runner slots. Check manifold orifices for blockage (ants?), particularly the one facing burner nearest to ignitor. If debris is present inside burner enclosure, CAREFULLY remove with vacuum cleaner. AVOID ANY CONTACT WITH IGNITOR. Re-install burner set and manifold, assuring that manifold brackets engage correctly in slots AND all orifices engage fully into burner entrance, replace manifold screws. Reconnect wires to gas control, reconnect gas supply & turn gas on. Apply liquid soap to union, check for bubbles (indicates leakage - correct before proceeding). Re-install cover on burner enclosure. Turn on power supply and check unit operation. Pay particular attention when re-installing manifold to assure proper alignment of orifices into burners.
This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

50,000 btu what is the screw in the back of the fule pump i have good heat but it is clouding up my grage

this is called a spoiler screw and is used to help give turbulance to the air and fuel as it mixes. the fuel is sprayed into little droplets and is atomized or mixed with air. This is the preparation for combustion. If you have a solid blue flame with just a hint of orange tipping on your flames, then it is mixed properly. The clouding up of your garage is from the flue pipe being cool at first and not venting properly like it does after it heats up.

Have a rheem criterion II. Model

The way it lights is that the gas is spread from one burner to the next by either a flame tray or small holes drilled in the burner tubes. If the flame does not get all the way across the burner tubes within a few seconds, the unit goes out on failure. Clean and inspect each burner tube, not just the orifice. Clean any tray that connects the burners. You can use a small wire brush or tooth brush but be careful near the glow igniter as it is very fragile.

My hayward model H350 will heat the pipes up so fast it will melt the cpvc fittings out of the supply lines. How high should the flame be and how close should the flame be to the heat exchanger pipes...

Where was the 7in reading taken? Inlet or Manifold? With or without the burners running? You probably want to look at the manifold side and adjust the regulator in the valve to get pressure on the manifold side down based on the assumption your pressure is to high somewhere to get a 7-10" tall flame on the burners.
