On start up the clicking noise is normal as well as knocking noise ....one important item with fan , if the fan was removed cleaned and then reinstalled with power to unit could have ruined the fan and it will have to be replaced..... Cant tell you why is wasn't firing before with no codes...other than flow sensor not working( most likey stopped with sand fragments or trash) the flow sensor detects hot water demand and ignites heater and if clogged it will not light up but doesn't give error code and the water running through hot side will be cold..... flow sensor is a turbine that detects water movement and lets heater light..... may want to get serviceman to check this out and clean turbine.... hope this helps...

Everything David said is right, but you may have a regulator problem. if it is Propane or Natural Gas. They both do not enter change. I have seen some that bought wrong heater's and If you put to much pressure on the Natural Gas it will lock up hopefully. But yes check on line to work with the Dealer.

Rinnai R85 starts to warm then stops and blinks 61??

I went to the Rinnai website and this is what I found for error code 61.
Error Code 61 Problem: Fan failure
Solution: Measure the resistance on the fan motor, check the damaged or loose wiring and connections. Make sure that the fan spins freely.
Sounds like either your fan is broken or something is keeping it from spinning freely.
Hope this helps.

R85 tankless water heater

Probably frozen. Let it thaw out and see if it works. You may want to think about wrapping the pipes with heat tape because of those low tempertures they could break especially if the unit is outside.

Good luck,

The Pilot burner flame is large & yellow

the pilot is getting too much air and is an indicaiot of dirty or air/ fuel ratio imbalance. The pilot is wimpy and the thermocoupler has alot to do with the gas . Make sure your thermocoupler is on the tip of the flame. You may end up replacing it. because it is showing signs of eminnt failure. When it fals your curners won't fire up. Good luck.

The burner lights up when it shouldn't

your thermostat is bad and needs to be changed but I am not sure if it is tied in with the circuit board or not, on the rinnai units it is and you would have to change the circuit board

Question, is there any other equipment that uses propane? You indicate that the problem started after a delivery of propane after running out. If so, I suspect a blockage in either the gas train or the rinnai itself. If tou have the temperature control that regulates the water temperature, you can recall error codes to pinpoint the issue. They are optional equipment so if you can wire one in or ask your propane gas supplier if their service department has one, it will aide in the diagnosis.
