The tv is at least 17 years old.The blinking red light blinks 5 times ,then the tv picture goes off . The voice is still on

Five blinks is the error code for an AKB (auto kine bias) error. What this means is that the set isn't able to balance the three color guns (red, green and blue) of the picture tube properly, and it's blanking out the screen.

To get the proper colors, the signals for the three colors need to be balanced, and Sony sets have circuitry to do this automatically. Other brands don't, and when they go out of balance you see a picture that starts to show tinting or colors that are off. As the picture tube ages, it gets harder to adjust the balance until finally the AKB circuit can't anymore, and poof, the picture goes away. With a 17-year-old tube, it's not surprising.

There isn't anything that can be done to fix the picture tube, it would need to be replaced. But the cost of the tube and the work required to get it set up after installation makes it completely uneconomical to repair this TV. A new picture tube is nearly $200. Then special tools are required to set the tube up (a process called convergence), so you'd need to find someone to put it in, and possibly pay to have the old one disposed of. A new 32-inch LCD set is around $350 now. Treat yourself to a new one.

Picture went completely fuzzy. What could the problem be?

The tv CRT( picture tube) have a radiaton posion infected in ur tv picture tube.This is how u discharge the CRT(picture tube) get the posion out.Take the tv back cover off.Take video board that connected to the CRT(picture tube) out.Plug it in,so u have a live current to the CRT(picture tube).Find a wire like an AV cable,should be find.One side of the metal,grounded to the metal frame somewhere.Take a long needle plier grab the other side of the AV cable wire,not the metal,(Caution high voltage live current).Come very close to the open CRT(picture tube).U will have a live current arc,than u,will hear a big "POP".U,just discharge the CRT(picture tube).The tv now the CRT(picture tube),now it good,it clear of posion infected in ur tv picture tube.Now,unplug ur tv.Put ur tv,back together.Hook up ur tv signal cable and plug in ur tv,now ur tv picture,will be clear,completely.I do this many times to dicharge fuzzy CRT(picture tube).When i was a tv Tech.for the SONY TV Corporation.

Tv set picture is gone

It depends, the center line you speak of, does it go from side to side? Or top to bottom? Side to side you have problems in the vertical circuit. Top to bottom you have a problem in the horizontal circuit. Not picture tube problem. If it is an analog tv and depending on how old it is. What an estimate and the actual repair would be you are better off buying a new one.

Error Code 5 flashes when unit shuts down

Good Day;
It sounds like the TV may have a shorted CRT, picture tube, but let's trouble shoot:
1. Unplug TV from wall.
2. Remove speaker grill, two on bottom, the screws are covered with plastic caps, right and left side on bottom next to floor.
3. Remove inner panel.
4. The blue tube is the one the right side, remove socket, with phillips driver, make sure it's not touching anything.
5. Plug and turn TV back on, if picture appears with no blue it's the tube.
6. If still shuts down, bad blue CRT driver IC.
CAUTION: Call a factory authorized service dealer to give you an estimate, if this sounds too hard.
Good Luck, Day, Big Irish.
