Freezer is working but refrigerator will not get colder than 50 degrees


Your problem is one or more parts of the defrost system is malfunctioned and in return your problem arises. There are three parts to the system, the defrost timer or in some cases control board, defrost thermostat also known as a bi-metal, and the defrost heater. The defrost system is set up to operate as so. The defrost timer or control board will turn the machine off, in some cases every 8 hours, some 12. During this time period the defrost heaters, located behind the freezer wall and rest underneath the evaporator, yet wires to them run up the side of it, are energized and emit heat that raises upward to melt the ice that has formed on the evaporator coils. The bi-metal or defrost thermostat is at the top of the evaporator. When the heat from the heater starts to reach the bi-metal, it breaks the circuit turning the heater off. The whole purpose of this is because the freezer cool the refridgerator side by drawing air across the coils and blowing to the other side via the evap fan motor. In my opinion, if you change one part of the defrost system change them all because usually when one part fails another will follow, so save yourself the time and the food loss, the cost difference is minute.

Self defroster is not defrosting. Changed timer with no luck.


Remove the freezer back panel and replace the defrost heater and defrost thermostat.

I have a Westinghouse frostfree rj25m upright fridge/freezer. The freezer is working fine but the refrigerator won't cool. I want to fix it myself as it is an old fridge and really not worth spending $300...


I am not sure if your freezer is working correctly if the fridge compartment is not at the right temperature. The way refrigerators work is that the fridge compartment is indirectly cooled by the freezer. The evaporator coils that cool the freezer, also cool the refrigerator. There is a fan in the freezer section that draws air from the refrigerator and blow them over the coils. The vent to the refrigerator could be blocked by debris or ice build up if the defrost circuit has failed. In order to check, you need to remove the back panel from the freezer section to check the condition of the coils/vent. Also check the fan in the freezer and see if it is operating. If the coil is encased in ice, then the defrost circuit has failed and that needs to be fixed otherwise the freezer will not cool to the correct temperature.

The way the defrost circuit worksis that normally the compressor has power for 8 hours, then the timer cuts power off and sends power to the defrost heater for about 45 minutes. The heater is attached to the coil and warms up the coil to melt the ice. When the coil reaches about 40 deg F, the thermostat which is in series with the heater, opens up cutting off power to the heater. This prevents the freezer from getting too hot. After the 45 minutes are up, the timer switches the power back to the compressor again to restart the 8 hour cooling cycle.

Any of the three components can fail causing you not to get the defrost cycle to work. Typically the timer stops advancing so you either stay in permanent cooling or defrost mode. Or the heater burns out so it can

The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can't flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer. Is the fan in the freezer working.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won't turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it's bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it's in the defrost mode.

As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer2_bing.gif and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...

Ice in defrost coils


The defrost systems is:
HEATER-DEFROST
THERMOSTAT-DEFROST
TIMER-DEFROST
Start with the timer. It is just under the front kick plate. there is a knob you can turn it slowly.until it clicks off the compressor. then open the freezer and listen . You should hear the heater come on .. it will sizzle when it comes on ...
You will have to remove the back panel of the freezer to check the heater for and thermostat for continuity. Heater are the lease likely part to go bad... I always change thermostat and timers together.

WESTINGHOUSE FREEZER MATE


Check the back bottom freezer wall to see if there is frost on it. If so you have a defrost problem. If the coil dosent defrost it becomes an ice ball and no air can flow. Could be a defrost timer which switches the refrig into the defrost cycle. There is also a heater and thermostat in the system. Shut it off overnight with the doors open to defrost it and get it temporarily running . If it is not frosted up make sure your coil underneath is clean and your cooling motor is running in the back, bottom.
