Question about Dell Dimension 3100 PC Desktop

Programs Freeze UP

I own a Dell Dimension 3100 PC. I receive a lot of error messages and reports on my computer wherein the program just freezes up and stops responding espcecially when online. I have CNTRL-ALT-DLT to get out and that only works part of the time.

The best way to solve most of the problems If you are getting them constantly, would be to use the recovery disc or windows setup cd to perform a fresh installation of windows into your computer.

before doing it though, would be a good idea to back up your files into a external hard drive so you could restore them back ones you had installed windows back into the machine.

I think this will be the best solution to your problem, troubleshooting and looking for spesific causes on many programs and why are they crashing is not really worth anyones time if you are getting a ton of such messages, the fresh install or restore will put the computer to the original state and all those problems should be gone saving alot of troubleshooting time.


Dell System restore:

  1. Back up all the data that you want to save. Once you reformat and restore the computer, all existing data will be completely erased. This includes any email, program files and drivers. Be sure to save your “My Documents” folder.
  2. Reboot your computer. As it boots up, a blue bar will appear across the top of the screen, displaying www.dell.com. As soon as you see this bar, press the “Control + F11” buttons. If you can't press these buttons in time, the computer will complete the boot process
  3. Click “Restore” on the screen that appears. A warning message will appear, indicating that you will lose all your data. This will initiate the restore process, which will take up to 10 minutes.
  4. Once the process is complete, a message will appear indicating that the system recovery process was successful. Click “Finish” to reboot your computer. Your hard drive is now restored to its original configuration.
  5. Review and accept the End User License Agreement and other legal material that will appear on your screen.
  6. Gather your software, such as the Dell application CDs that were shipped to you with your laptop. Use these to reinstall the applications that originally came on your laptop, such as MS Office and Quicken.

to restore from a restore cd or windows installation cd. Insert the cd into the drive and press a button if asked.

if not and the computer starts up into windows normally then the computer is not set to start up from a cd, you can either enter the setup / bios to change that setting OR right when you power up the computer look at the screen it will say what button to press in order to enter boot menu or bios, it will very likely be button F12 or similar, it should say on the screen when you power on.

if it doesn't, then you need to go into the bios and change the boot order so that the computer starts from the CD first.

after that you should be able to start from the cd and install the OS (Operating system, eg.Windows)

heres how to start the xp setup from the cd:

insert the cd and press a button when asked to start the setup program from the cd

Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

I have a dell dimension 5100, 5 yrs old. The computer is very very slow and i would like to know how i can improve its speed. I did already programs as sweep and clean but it didn' t really help.


well several things can be done to increase the performance of your pc.

install da maximum amount of ram on ur pc.

install a secondary hard drive. save all data on da secondary hard drive. music, pics, videos etc.

uninstall all programs that you do not use

Dell demension 3100 dvd plays any disk ok but will not burn


when you try to save or burn any data to disk, you should use burning programs just like nero or any other burning program. at the time when you click the button burn, it always ask you to insert disk such as CD/DVD +R or RW

When going onto a website or internet exporer iget this message error while unpacking program code 2 report to author


This issue normally happens when their are many toolbars and other addons installed on your browser. And if those or one of the addons are currupted. Hence uinstall all of the toolbar and the addons (like yahoo toolbar etc). You really dont need those toolbar.

Every time I log in my computer freeze


When booting up press F8 and boot in safe mode then run MSCONFIG and make sure your computer turns on running only basic programs. It could be you have a program running that is causing it to freeze as soon as you boot up. If it still freezes in safe mode you might need to repair windows using the original CD.

try going into your BIOS and changing the boot sequence, it may be set to boot from floppy instead of harddrive. or you could just reinstall windows, but that sucks cuz then you lose all your data and programs. and not to be rude, but you shouldnt have bought a dell, they are full of problems.

Cd/dvd burner too slow


It may just be that that is the speed of your drive.  See if it says on the drive how fast it is.  If it is too slow, then you may want to consider getting a newer, faster drive.
