IIT-JEE 2011 AnalysisIIT JEE 2011 was conducted on 10th April 2011 in 131 cities all over India in 1051 centres for 4,85,262 registered candidates. For the first time, JEE has announced that scanned images of the Optical Response Sheets (ORS) with the candidates' details and their responses (answers) will be displayed on the JEE website after 25th May 2011. Answer Keys to JEE 2011 questions will be displayed on the JEE website on 15th May 2011 after completing the evaluation of OMR Sheets.
There were 10 versions for IIT-JEE 2011 - 0 to 9. The order of subjects in both papers were the same - Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics but the total marks, the number of questions and types of questions in both papers were distinct from each other.
Paper-1Paper1 had 69 questions in total for 240 marks - in the order of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Each subject had 23 questions and the pattern was exactly the same for all the subjects.
This is a moderate level paper leaning more towards easy level of difficulty. The usual weightage of Physical > Organic > Inorganic Chemistry is maintained. Most of the questions in this paper evaluate the conceptual clarity of the student.
Overall the difficulty level of the paper was moderate. Still there were a few numerical questions involving elaborate mathematical calculations making them time consuming and hence difficult. No representation of Optics in this paper. Major focus in this paper was on Mechanics (for a total marks of 31)
Mathematics part of the 2011 JEE paper 1 was considered easier than the paper 1 of 2010. Few questions in Integer answer type require in-depth understanding of the concepts with perseverance in solving problems. Trigonometry had a good representation in the paper; the passage on matrices required quick thinking to interpret and solve the questions. One question about '3 x 3 non-singular skew symmetric matrices' has a basic flaw since odd ordered skew symmetric matrices are always singular. Paper 1 was a moderately difficult paper.
    Pattern of Paper-1:
    • Q.No.1 to 7 - Single Correct Choice Type (7 questions for 21 marks). +3 for correct answer and -1 for wrong answer
    • Q.No. 8 to 11 - Multiple Correct Choice Type (4 questions for 16 marks). +4 for correct answer with NO negatives
    • Q.No. 12 to 16 - Paragraph Type(5 questions for 15 marks). There were 2 paragraphs- one paragraph with 2 questions and the second one with 3 questions. All questions were of Single Correct Choice Type. +3 for correct answer and -1 for wrong answer
    • Q.No.17 to 23- Integer Type (7 questions for 28 marks). Answers were of single digit (ie, 0 to 9) . +4 for correct answer with NO negatives.
Instructions for the exam was given in the front sheet itself and only 2 pages were provided for rough work. Among the subjects, students felt that Mathematics was a bit tough while Chemistry was easier.
Paper-2Paper 2 had 60 questions in total - in the order of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Each subject had 20 questions and as in paper 1 the pattern was exactly the same across the subjects. Questions had differential markings, each subject had 80 marks and the maximum mark for the paper was 240.
Paper 2 of IIT-JEE 2011 was difficult compared to paper 1. Weightage wise the Physical > Organic > Inorganic formula is maintained. Generally the nature of the questions in Physical chemistry is calculation oriented and hence the difficulty. Also complexity of Organic questions made this paper a challenging one.
Questions from certain areas which were not represented in paper 1 (gravitation, optics etc.) appeared in paper 2 thus balancing the Syllabus coverage. The difficulty level of this paper was slightly less than paper 1 especially the Integer Answer Type.
Paper 2 Mathematics part was tougher than the first paper - for the complexity in combining topic areas, for e.g. the matrix match had questions from 4 different areas posing a challenge for the student in the exam hall. Likewise, this paper required more calculations in solving than the first paper. Overall Mathematics part of IIT-JEE 2011 was less difficuly and less time consuming than that of 2010. The second paper was restricted to lesser number of areas, for e.g. there were no questions from Trigonometry. But this time Differential Calculus and Coordinate Geometry were well
    Pattern of Paper 2:
    • Q.No.1 to 8 - Single Correct Choice Type (8 questions for 24 marks). +3 for correct answer and -1 for wrong answer
    • Q.No. 9 to 12 - Multiple Correct Choice Type (4 questions for 16 marks). +4 for correct answer with NO negatives. There was NO partical marking as well.
    • Q.No. 13 to 18 - Integer Type (6 questions for 24 marks). Answers were of single digit (ie, 0 to 9) . +4 for correct answer with NO negatives.
    • Q.No.19 & 20- Matrix Match Type (2 questions with 4 rows each - for 16 marks). There were 4 elements in the first column to be matched with 5 elements in the second column. Each row carried 2 marks. There were NO negarive marking.
Chemistry section in Paper2 was difficult compared to Paper1. Mathematics and Physics sections were only moderately difficult.

    Examples of investigatory projects

    Hi, Arniejane,

You have asked a very good question!. I hope you are still interested in an answer to it, even though a new school year has begun and is running since you first asked it.

I will be brief, since I am not sure you are still interested, because you have probably moved on to another grade. I will give my best advice in a few words for now, saving more details unitl you post an update to your original question.

To start a good quality chemistry investigation, you should avoid selecting a cookie-cutter topic that thousands of other students have already done. Instead, begin your own investigation (research) project simply by asking a question about something in the world around you that you are REALLY interested in learning more about that no one else already has complete answers to.

Ask as many questions like that that you can think of, and select the one that you think you could solve through experiments in the time allowed. That won't be difficult, because almost everything you ask will most likely have a chemical connection, since chemistry is often described as the central science.

Chemistry can be found everywhere, in your home, school, your front or back yard, in you, in your food, your medicines, your clothing, in toys, in machines, in paper, in inks, in paints, in dyes, in soil, in your environment (air, weather, climate, pollution, topsoil contaminants, drinking water, etc), in materials (automobile tires, fuel, clothing, bandaides, etc), in cosmetics, vitamins ... the list goes on and on! From among these and others that you can think of, you can probably list at least one or more questions that could be developed into a really high quality "investigatory project."

It would be important to select a question that requires measurement of some sort. Measurement allows one to collect data, which are the bases of most good investigations. You want to be able to find a data-based solution to your question. Without data, the project you do would not be "scientific."

Give more consideration to questions that require materials already available a) in your chemistry kit, b) in your school lab, or c) in your local community. Also consider seeking advice and materials from the colleges in your metropolitan area. Many professors would be delighted to help you by answering your questions about technical difficulties that might occur as you work on your investigation - just be mindful that you should acknowledge their help in your investigation's final report.

If you post an update to your question, please include more details on your interests that could the sparks for good ideas for specific projects. I'd be glad to help you with the chemical connections, sometimes they are subtle and not immediately recognizable.

    Good luck!
