Hi, this is a pretty generic answer, so it's really more of a guideline.
Some come attached at the bottom of the furnace, and are generally removed when the unit is installed. If it's there, it pulls out like a drawer.
Most furnaces are installed on a platform, which is really a box (plenum). Below the platform, and opening to the room, is a louvered grate. Air is drawn in through the grate and into the furnace. The grate has clips on it to keep it closed. Loosening the clip(s) allows the grate to be opened. The filter is usually behind there.

There is a kill switch behind the cover that you removed to change the filter...make sure the cover is on correctly or maybe the switch went bad...
