Question about Ariens Garden

My Zoom 50 dies after mowing about 15 min. Why??

It had been running fine but lately its gone from running about 30 min before dyeing to about 15 min. If I disengage the blades & work the throttle a bit i can usually keep it running somewhat. Any thoughts??

How does it idle? Rough or how it is supposed too. From the information you provided, it would suggest a problem in the fuel system, or the linkage to the throttle control.

Could be overheating, could be a safety device malfunctioning. Check oil, air cleaner, fuel filter, and plugs. How many hours are on it?

Testimonial: "It idles fine & runs smooth until I've mowed for about 15 min. then it acts like its bogged down. If it quits I can easily restart it again but once the blades are engaged the additional drag on the engine causes the same thing to happen."

When it dies, unscrew the gas cap and replace it. If your unit starts right up, you need a new gas cap, the vent cup is either damaged or missing. If that's not it, replace the spark plug. If that's not it, replace the ignition module. When coils go bad, they either outright fail, or go gradually. A gradual coil failure will present itself as failing when they get hot. As time goes on, it takes less and less heat to make the coil fail.

SOURCE: Mower runs for 10-15 mins. then shuts off.

I would agree with the gas cap being the problem. There should be a insert inside the cap which helps with the tap pressure. If this is lost then the engine will run for a few min. and shut off.
There is one other thing and that is the float in the carb bowl. It may be allowing in just enough gas to fill the bowl and then it is sticking. This would account for just enough fuel to run for a brief period and then shut down.

SOURCE: dies after 10-15 min of use

Hello barcomb31:

>>The Following is a Basic Instruction File I made for this. Any Input is Appreciated. I Usually Suggest you Check the Following in this Order for a Problem like yours. 1- Check the Gas Tank Cap and Ensure it is Venting the Tank. A Vacuum Builds in the Tank and the Gas Flow Stops or Slows (15 to 45 Minutes and if the Small Grainular Sand is in the Tank it can Take Several Days of Constant Running to Bring All the Sand Particales to the Tank Outlet Port) to a Point it Shuts Off the Engine. 2- Operate the Equipment Until it Quits (15min to 1hr). Then Immediately Check for Fire from the Plug. If the Plug is Firing, then 3- Check the Carburetor Solenoid. If the Carburetor Shut Off Solenoid has Current, then Remove the Carburetor Solenoid and Go to the Hardware Store. Purchase a Bolt of the Same Diameter and Threads. It Needs to be 3/4" Long. Put this Bolt in Place of the Solenoid. If this Corrects the Engine Problem, then Replace the Solenoid. ***NOTE: THIS IS FOR CHECKING THE SOLENOID ONLY I NEVER SUGGEST YOU OPERATE THE ENGINE WITH THE SOLENOID OUT OF THE CARBURETOR EXCEPT FOR TESTING PURPOSES*** Sometimes the Plunger is Moving, Just Not Far Enough to Allow the Gas to Enter the Jets. 4- Depending on the Model Mower, it can Also be the Pickup Tube in the Gas Tank. If No Fire, then Remove the Shut Off Wire from the Coil and Check for Fire. If Still No Fire, then the Ign Module or Coil is Bad. **Even if the Coil is New of Fairly New, it can Still be Bad.** On JD Mowers; Remove the Igniter/Module and the Coil and have the Local JD Dealer Test them.
Please, Do Not Hesitate, If I Missed Something or you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Be Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

When it starts cutting out and you turn off the PTO, how long do you have to wait until it can be turned on again? It sounds as if your PTO is overheating and loading down the engine. Run the mower for about 10 minutes, shut it off, and carefully feel the PTO housing. Resume cutting and repeat after it starts cutting out.

Replacing it is not as simple as changing the spark plug, but does not require an advanced degree.

Similar heaters that use diesel have to routinely cope with the dye added to untaxed fuel, ditto similar heaters that use both fuels. Unless there was an excess of dye in the fuel you used the problem was probably a coincidence.

Dirt can be a big problem due to corrosion forming in the fuel tank caused by a relatively large percentage of moisture naturally in the fuel and the formation of condensation. Fuel is generally filtered through a fine gauze when the tank is filled but there is little or no filtration preventing dirt already in the tank from being picked up and finding a way into the spray head which generally jams the spinner affecting the quality of the fuel spray.

Cleaning the spinner and nozzle might work for a while but only a major clean out will restore reliability until the next time. It is also wise to check and adjust the pressure of the air pump.

An engine is usually not permanently damaged by running without oil for a minute or two. They are often run with no oil pressure for 10-15 seconds every time the oil is changed. It's never really good to run them without oil, but it doesn't usually hurt them if it's only a minute or two. Hydraulic lifters, however, do pump out quickly and make A LOT of noise. If the oil pump fixes the oil pressure problem, you should be fine. Obviously I can't guarantee it, but if it was only a minute, I'd give it much better than a 50/50 chance -- I'd say it is probably more like a 95% chance you'll be fine.
