The strip between freezer and fridge is very hot

The strip of metal between the freezer and fridge on my whirlpool side by side is very hot. Also, the freezer isnt keeping things frozen and the fridge isnt as cold as it should be. The temp is adjusted to the coldest setting for both sides of the unit.

sounds as if you either need to clean the coils under the unit,they are clogged and unable to disapate correct amount of heat, or your fan mounted behind the unit, next tothe compressor has failed..YOUR UNIT IS WORKING EXTRA HARD TO GET RID OF HEAT.check those 2 places
