Hi normally most E39/E60 BMW electronic gearboxes have a safety lock connected to foot brake which restricts gear selection unless driver apply;s foot brake.this could be a possible fault ,gear linkage have come loose, otherwise internal gearbox fault ,this will require a full diagnostic fault code report to determine that faults are permanent or intermittent . low transmission oil level can cause this problem.
that fault code relates to a internal component failure inside the gearbox, or a wiring problem from the powertrain controle module to the gearbox, it all depends on the gearbox that is fitted. if the gearbox has a plastic sump pan the controle module is part of the gearbox, the shift solenoid moves a valve inside the gearbox to direct fluid pressure to the relevant servos to control gearchanges e.t.c.does the car still drive?
this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating
that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of
lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected
a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM,
SRS and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must
now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and
"scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the
of Abbreviations. ABS Antilock brake system.TCS Traction control
system, TCM Transmission control module, SRS Supplemental restraint
system, BCM Body control module
the code P 0751 Means you have a problem with the shift Solenoid valve (A) and sometimes it get stuck open or closed and it doesnt let the valve shift as it should and its an electronic problem and this could happen anytime with warning, and when the problem is detected , the code gets stored and it doesn't mean that it needs changed this might happen ones then it gone. So all I can say is if you are experiencing this problem then have your fluid flushed and change the filter too and hope this will wash any dirt that could have built inside the Valve body of the transmission , and if the problem is not solved then you might need someone who works on the transmission to change the Shift solenoid valve which is located in the valve body of the transmission. Good luck bro
