Question about Robertshaw Valve, Combination - 700-502

1 Answer

What is the purpose of the small copper tube that runs from the top of the valve to the end of the burner?

Pilot is working fine. Valve won't open & let the main gas flow.

Sounds like the thermocouple. Flame detector. Shots off gas if flame not lit.

I have a pitco 18ss-gv.the pilot is lit, but the ignitor wont fire the burners on. It worked last night, but not today for some reason.

Where the pilot light is should be a small copper tube connected to a smaller copper tube that goes back to the main gas valve. It's called a thermocouple. That's what tells the main gas valve the pilot is lit and allows the main burner to come on only when the pilot is burning so it doesn't flood the room with gas. The thermocouple is most likely bad. They usually have them at hardware stores like ace or you can have a professional replace it. It's fairly simple, if you do it yourself, bring the old one with you to the hardware store.

Furnace and pilot will not stay lit

The tube is gas supply for pilot. You have to make sure the thermocouple is in the flame at least half way and make sure its tight in the gas valve. There should be a small silver plug on the gas valve near the pilot supply tube. You can pop the cap and adjust the height of the pilot flame a little. Can you tell if it has a flame rod in or above the flame? If it does You can remove it and clean it with steel wool.

If pilot stay lit, then thermocouple is working.
If pilot will light, then you have gas. If pilot goes out when pilot button is released, then thermocouple is next suspect.

Thermocouple tip must sit in pilot flame.
The pilot light heat applied to two different metals inside thermocouple causes small current.
The current travels back to gas control valve through copper line.
If the gas valve receive this current, then a magnetic switch stays open and allows gas into the gas control valve.
The magnetic switch is on the end of the red button you push down when lighting pilot. Essentially the red button is an override to the magnetic switch.
If the gas control valve does not receive the current, then the magnetic switch does not stay open when you release the red button.
When replacing thermocouple, note that it is not screwed very tight into the gas control valve. Finger tight + 1/4 turn. If it is overtightened, then the small thermocouple current shorts out against the gas control body.

How do I change the pilot light as it is not working anymore.

It won't be the pilot light, It will be the gas valve control, if the pilot light actually lights but the burners won't light,, then you need to check the thermocouple , its that little round thing that sits inside the flame of the pilot light, and has (usually) a copper tube that runs back to the actual gas valve, If its gone bad, the signal to the gas valve is lost so the gas never gets released so nothing lights

Pilot runs gas valve clicks but no ignition dayton 3e226c

There is a small Allen head screw in the gas valve that can be removed to test for gas after the gas valve. When the gas valve opens, gas should be present at that port. If none, you have a bad gas valve. If you gas gas, then there must be a restriction at the main burner.

I have a Whynter ph-2100h and the pilot will not light the burner nor will it stay lit once i have ignited the pilot. The gas runs for approximately five minutes then shuts down completely.....help

I would think the thermocouple isn't working. The thermocouple provides the power to open the gas valve. One end of the thermocouple should be in the pilot flame, it is on the end of a small copper tube that connects to the gas valve. Make sure you are following ignition instructions. Hope this helps ya.

VN18TB PILOT LITE GOES OUT STAY LITE TILL HEATER COMES ON AFTER THE HEAT RUNS AND TURNS OFF THE PILOT LITE SHUTS OFF NATURAL GAS VANGUARD

Sounds like a weak thermocouple. With the extra heat of the main burner running it can keep the pilot solenoid open...without it it fails shut. Try replacing the thermocouple. (small rod the pilot flame burns against with a skinny copper tube going to gas valve).

Pilot lighting

1) Open the door on the bottom of the tank to show the burner. 2) Turn the valve to "pilot" and depress. 3) Light the match, (best if you have a candle/grill lighter), and follow the skinny copper tube from the valve to the burner inside (this is called the thermocoupler). At the end of it, you will see the pilot. 4) Once pilot is lit, keep valve depressed for a minute (this warms the thermocoupler, thus sending a signal to the valve saying the pilot is lit). 5) Let go of the pilot button (usually red). 6) If pilot stays on, put the door(s) back on and turn the valve to "on". You will hear/see the gas ignite when complete. Good luck!

Wall furnace model # SFB50146B Thermal Coupler. Does it have 2 wires?

if the pilot light stays lit, but the burners don't kick on, it's a problem with the thermostat or thermostat wiring, or a problem with the valve inside the gas actuator

Pilot on burners won't light

Pilot won't light - natural gas or propane. check for a spider web in the burner tube. check no dust in burner tube. check surface igniter is lit. if pilot lights check flame detector - may be a millivolt generator - it is a small capillary with a copper tip in flame path. no fire will keep the pilot valve closed. replace the generator.
