When I plug in my 320GB My Passport Western

I have tried searching for this problem posting with no luck, so if it is posted elsewhere, could you please point me in the right direction? Thanks.

When I plug in my 320GB My Passport Western Digital HD, it shows that I have 198 GB out of 298 GB free, however when I attempt to transfer over a file, say something that is 4 GB in size, I can't transfer the data because I don't have enough space. Any advice is welcomed.

I am guessing that you' are running windows and your harddrive is FAT32 formatted. In windows you cannot create, move, or edit any file larger than 4GB in a FAT32 partition. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314463

If you need to store files greater than 4GB you will need to change the format to NTFS, which is not easy to do while keeping the data (so carefully research that procedure first).

It seems your HDs left over portion which is not showing is not formatted for the particular OS in which you are trying to copy. It is advised to backup your HD contents and format the HD with the OS from which you want to take data in the same FAT system which that OS is using.

Can only see one WD Passport 320GB drive at a time.

This is most likely a classic case of them trying to occupy the same drive letter. If you open disk management Start > Run > type 'diskmgmt.msc' and you should see them both there - One with a drive letter and one without, simply right click on the drive which doesn't have a drive letter and select 'change drive letters and path...'. Change the drive letter to something you know doesn't really get used and they should both appear in my computer.

Hope this solves your problem.

google western digital and dowload the drivers again, then reinstall from disc if you have one! (do this with the drive un-plugged) when you then re-boot and plug it in all should come right!

WESTERN DIGITAL 320GB PASSPORT USB PORTABLE

Doh

After posting the above, I found the answer on another forum about 10 minutes later. The WD drive is formated in FAT 32. My XP PC HDDs are formated in NTFS. FAT 32 has a 4Gb file size limit.

Answer. Format the WD drive in NTFS. It takes about 10 sec to do a quick format, but of course you lose all the content. Then You can copy anything you like to it. I have just copied a 33Gb video to the disc.
