SOURCE: using as startup disk

Hi,

If you used Acronis, you need to clone the 30Gb and not backup. In doing so, the booting information is likewise copied to the 80Gb, whereas back up is simply copying contents (that you specified) hence will not boot and not be active.

Pls remember that by cloning, Acronis would erase the partition (and contents) of the 80Gb. At certain settings, it would also split the 80Gb into 2 partitions; 30Gb & 50Gb. Further, verify that the 80Gb is "Set Active" and partitioned as a Primary and not Logical.

As to your other concern of installing, in some instances, some not so recent motherboards' BIOS/CMOS will not recognize the 80Gb. Other than that, you were doing it correct; new 80Gb as primary/master with jumper to the pins nearest the IDE cable, any other device (CD ROM or another HD) should be set as primary/slave (SL). Additionally, pls verify that your motherboard auto-detected your new 80Gb as your primary boot media (settings in your CMOS/BIOS).

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Which is it a Dell 3000 or Dell 1100 ?

The jumper settings on the rear of the DVD drive; set the jumpers to "cable select" mode (if you are uncertain how to set the jumpers, check the documentation that came with your drive or look for a diagram printed on the drive itself). Insert your DVD drive into the selected drive bay and connect the IDE and power cables. Use the screws that came packaged with the drive to secure the component to the drive bay.

Enter the BIOS (setup menu on power on) and then holddown the key and depress the then the keys insuccession. This will force the motherboard to load default settings and alsoforce the motherboard to redetect all IDE devices. Note: The selection for thefloppy drive will be set to ON. How do I add more memory to my dell dimension 3000 computer thatn has a 34 GB Harddrive?

Go buy an IDE hard drive of whichever size you want, and connect it to the IDE cable that your current drive is connected to inside the computer. If you don't want to reinstall windows, you'll have to either purchase a separate IDE cable and connect the new drive to another IDE port on your motherboard (IDE cables are the thin, flattned cables that are fairly wide) If your current IDE cable has a freed up connection, ensure that your drives are jumpered properly with the master/slave options that should be printed on the drive itself, with a diagram. Your main drive (34GB) should be the master, the new one set to slave - this will keep the computer booting off of your current hard drive. It may seem intimidating, but installing a new hard drive is easy once you open up the computer and start comparing parts, looking for your hard drive ports and power supply cables. Just make sure the IDE cable and the power supply cable are firmly attached to the new hard drive when you install it.(power supply cable usually has a white tip, with four loosely bound wires leading to it) I hope this helps!

Need to replace cd-rom drive, how difficult? dell dimension 3000 pc desktop

It is not difficult to change cd/dvd drive.
Open cpu cabinet.
Then remove icd cable and power cable from cd/dvd drive.
Then remove screws of old cd/dvd drive.
Then you can pull it from cabinet from front side.
Then put your new cd/dvd drive into it's position then lock it with screws.
Then connect ide cable from motherboard and power cable to drive.
Then you can use it.
If you connect to drive with 1 ide cable means if you connect harddrive and cd/dvd drive with 1 cable then set harddrive as master and cd/dvd rom as slave you can set it slave with jumper settings.
It is in back side of cd/dvd drive.
There is instruction how to slave it with jumper.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

I am installing a new WD3200AAJB HD in a Dell Dimension 4550. This is the only HD in the system. There are also 2 CD drives and a floppy drive. I used the jumper settings the drive came with which pins...

Reinstall your old hard drive as master and install the new hard drive as slave.

Here is the link to jumper settings from Westrn Digital;

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1540&p_created=#jumper

If you've got your jumper settings wrong and installed your os on the 127 GB section of the 320 GB Hard drive and you change jumper settings and then you have problems you may need to reinstall the old hard drive as master and the new hard drive as slave. Reformat the new hard drive as 320 GB, and as a bootable drive. You can either do a disk copy from old to new or reinstall your os on the 320 GB drive. Please let me know how this goes. Quantum Fireball lct 30gig not recognized in Dell Dimension 3000

Turns out this particular drive needs TWO jumpers on it, to set it to CS. I received it used with a single jumper in the Master position, but after checking the Maxtor/Quantum website, it listed the jumper positions and showed the second jumper. As soon as I installed the TWO jumpers in the correct position, the Dimension 3000 booted right up and let me reinstall Windows. I had scoured the internet for many hours looking for a solution, none solved it until I decided to check the manufacturers website. Always start there!- Solved!

Attempted to install New 320G hard drive in a Dell Dimension 3000, but the BIOs refused to see the drive at all. Despite double checking jumper settings and using other cables. The OS is Windows XP SP2,...

Check to see which bios version your computer is using. An update is probably necessary in order for the computer to detect the drive correctly.

If that doesn't work most hard drive manufacturers have software that you can install so that the bios will detect the drive correctly.

What's the make and model of the new drive?

Ok... one end of the ide cable goes to the board... make sure that's plugged in correctly and has a blue connector.... second... the last drive on the other end has to be the master... the drive before that is the slave... if that setup is not working ensure that the drivers are set for master and slave... also make the power is pluigged into both drives

2nd internal hard drive

I’m assuming that you have an IDE hard disk drive ribbon cable with 2 connectors on it. One connector is for the primary or master drive. The other is for a secondary or slave drive. Return all jumper settings to cable select (CS) settings. Connect the 500 to the slave connector and power on computer and enter the set up (BIOS) menu by tapping the F2 key. Hold down the <Alt> key and depress the <E> then the <F> keys in succession. This will force the motherboard to load default settings and also force the motherboard to redetect all IDE devices. Note: The selection for the floppy drive will be reset to ON. If you do not have one then you must disable floppy in set up (BIOS) menu.
