Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

Open Question

{{calling Rich or D. Floyd Colb!!!}} Mayta water continuously run, must shut off manually

I initially had a pump problem determined from ND code. After consulting on this site, I was able to take apart the pump and find it jammed with polyfill from a dog bed (lesson learned!!). I ran it in test mode and draining fine, so I put it back together and figured I was back in business. I was so very proud of myself that I put in a load and went to brag to Dad how his little girl fixed her own washer, after being told by a repair guy that "it was too expensive to fix and no way would I be able to repair myself" hah, I thought! I went to check on the load only to find it overflowing with water & I was only able to shut it off by shut vavle at wall. It ran both hot & cold water thru machine even when machine is unplugged. I am not 100% that this happened before I "fixed" it. One thing I may have done wrong is (please understand, I had to take back off, realize it wasn't way to get to pump, reassmebly, etc..I had gotten frustrated and lazy, I didn't removewater lines before I propped up lid with a broom so I could work/see when working on pump. {By hold it up this way did I break it?}After looking through all similar posts, I disconnect water inlet valve to clean for debris, I am at a loss. It doesn't come apart. I am afraid of spending time & money to replace and it not be the answer. Any suggestions?

SOURCE: Water temperature problem

Chief Walley, you have a temperature control board that sits right behind the timer. A thermistor senses the water and sends the info to this board. The thermistor sits at the water injector. The board may be your problem, I have seen many like this. Keep in mind that the target temp for cold is 75 degrees. If your incomming water is higher than this, you are going to get a warm fill, which they think is cold. Without being there, I would go after the board. Catriver...post back.

SOURCE: Washer filled up with water when not turned on

It sounds like the water inlet valve assembly is letting a trickle of water thru when its not supposed to. It is located on the rear of the washer, it is the part the water hoses connect to. Make sure the power and water are turned off, then disconnect the water fill hoses. The valve is attached to a bracket, the valve will have 4 electrical selenoids on it and a hose leading further into the machine. Make a drawing of where the wires/colors were attached before you pull them off. The valve for that machine (MLG2000AWW or MLG2000AXW) usually costs about $45.00 to $55.00

SOURCE: will not drain - know how to take apart hoses from pump to see bl

Hello itieflies83

My two cents: I’m an owner/DIY'er and have not experienced a pump/blockage issue. With the test I speak of the controller board sends 120VAC directly to the pump no other signaling ie. the pressure switch can override the test, you are in Service Mode. If your pump impeller is turning (not jammed) and you have removed the front panel and verified no clogs are restricting input flow to the pump then this test should pump out the tub. I would not suspect a clog on the pump output side but could happen. The noise from my pump running is a little bit louder than a hum. Does the hum you hear from the pump sound familiar as it worked normally in the past? If there is no input blockage to the pump my next step would be to remove the pump, inspect the input to the pump for clog/jam, power up the pump and verify the impeller is turning. If you can’t DIY and you can’t get a local DIY’er to help you then it’s decision time to get a qualified appliance service repair person involved if you are going to keep the machine. Cost would be for the service call and pump. See if they would bring out a pump for the machine on the first service call. They will need your model number and serial number of the machine. Online parts supplier sells the pump for about $40. Maybe other forum members will jump in and offer another resolution path to go down. Good luck to you.

SOURCE: washer not spinning or draining

Same problem.  Water wouldn't drain, no trouble codes, door wouldn't unlock.  When the Rinse and Spin cycle or Drain cycle was selected all I got was a growling humm from the pump.  Clued in by the above postings I pulled the washer away from the wall, tipped it back so it leaned against the wall with the bottom fully exposed and removed the plastic panel covering the bottom (underneath - 4 screws) of the machine.  The small pump was just where these postings said it would be, top right of the bottom opening. Disconnect the two drain hoses from the pump. Mine were connected with hose clamps that I removed with just my thumb and fore-finger.  I had two quarters AND a nickel lodged inside the pump and was able to coax them out without removing the pump. Replaced the hoses and bottom panel, tipped upright and I was back in business - didn't even have to unplug (Its never a bad idea to do so) or disconnect the water hoses.

  • Total time spent: including searching for these posts and random dead-end trouble shooting - 1.5 hours.
  • Tools: 1 Phillips screwdriver.

Getting nd code and load will not drain water after washing and will not go into spin mode. I replaced the drain pump (one vane on pump broke) but still getting the code. I checked and cleaned all hoses...

"nd" means: Your washer is not draining. It can also mean that the unit senses a small clog while draining. Before calling for service, check the following.

1) Turn off the unit and turn it on again.
2) Select only the Spin Cycle.
3) Press the Start/Pause to drain the water.
If it still does not drain, call for service.

So it sounds like it knows its not draining but wants to. If you can hear the pump driving, it is a clog somewhere. If you don't hear the pump driving, it could be the pump has died.

For all you do-it-yourselfers out there, I got this information from the user manual I found at:

We are talking about a FAV6800A or FAV9800A machine correct?

You will need the Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

If so it sounds like you have a stuck Water Valve or a Pressure Switch malfunction that never signals the Control Board of wash tub water level. And or a possible drain pump/drain line clog. I don't think you have a Drain Line issue because you don't report an ND error code for no drain.

Are you up for troubleshooting to DIY the repair?

If you unplug the washer does water continue to flow which requires you to shut the water valve to the washer? If water doesn’t flow I would next step you through how to check that the Pressure Switch is signaling the Control Board to turn off the 120VAC to the water inlet solenoids on proper water level fill.

Before we go any further let’s hear back from you.

I own a FAV6800A and I'm very familiar with troubleshooting and resolving issues with both it and the LCD version the FAV9800A.........Rich

Machine has a nd code and doesnt drain completly

Hello philncrystal,

My solution is for a FAV6800A or FAV9800A is that your machine model number? If so the ND error code = No Drain the machine Control Board has not seen the a low level pressure switch transition from -1 to -0 in the time allowed for the drain cycle to complete. See Page 16 of the Service Manual.

Her some handy DIY links FAV6800A/FAV9800A Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

I would go into Service Mode put 5 gallons of water in the wash tub and turn on the drain pump in Service Mode and check the flow rate.

MY FAV6800A will pump out 5 gallons of water in about 20 seconds. You may have a drain line clog, the drain pump impeller may be jammed with debris or the drain pump is not turning on/failed.

We need to troubleshoot do you want to DIY? I’m an owner like you and have repair knowledge of the machine. Let me know if I can help…..Rich

Error code nD, won't go into spin cycle

Is the Machine a FAV6800A or a FAV9800A?

Do you want to DIY the fix?

The nd error code = No Drain error code.

You could have drain line clog, an issue with the drain pump or a stuck pressure switch. Do you hear the machines drain pump turn on and pump out water before entering lnto the spin cycle? Is there water left in the tub with the nd error code? If you can provide feedback on the questions above I will help guide through the troubleshooting steps.

You will need the Service Manual to troubleshoot.

What does "nd" mean on my neptune washer

Hello tana_carney4,

Your in the FAV6800AW forum so I’ll assume your machine type is a FAV6800AW or FAV9800AW. I’m an owner of the FAV6800AW with some hands on experience with the machine.

The ND error code equals No Drain. The microprocessor on the Control Board keeps track of the time needed to receive a Low/Mid Level fill indication from the pressure switch at the start of a tub drain cycle. If that time elapses and the pressure switch is signaling that the tub has watering remaining then you trigger the ND error code. Is the tub empty or is there standing water in the tub with the ND error code?

If the wash tub is empty and you fail out of the wash cycle with the ND error code then I feel you have pressure switch failure, the pressure switch is signaling the Control Board incorrectly. We need to go into Service Mode “Board Input Test “ and check if the pressure switch is signaling a -1 with an empty tub (no water). If rhe pressure is signaling a -1 with an empty tub then the pressure switch is false signaling “Stuck Pressure Switch” you will error out in the wash cycle with the ND error code and the Pressure Switch will have to be replaced.

If the wash tub has standing water in the tub with a ND error code to the console we need to check for a failed drain motor, a drain pump impeller jam/clog. We would go into Service Mode turn the drain pump and listen. Do we hear the drain pump turn on? If so will it pump out 5 gallons of water in about 25 seconds or less as my working FAV6800AW will do? Further troubleshooting will require a DVM to verify that 120VAC is applied to the drain pump, If we have 120VAC at the drain pump motor connections and we don’t hear it turn on we would need to remove the drain pump and check for failed motor or jammed impeller. If the drain pump turns on but we have slow drain out of the drain pump we could would need to remove the drain line from the Sump Cap to the inlet of the drain pump and check for restrictions and possible impeller damage to the drain pump.

The question is do you just want know what the ND error code is?

Do you want to DIY the repair? If not then it would be time to call in a repair service.

Here is the FAV6800A/ FAV9800A Service Manual link.

If your machine type is not a FAV6800AW or FAV9800AW then please disregard my post.

Hey Jerry,

It’s a $1K machine and I feel fairly easy to work on…. But like most machines has its problems. Does the ND error code display after emptying the washer of water? If so I think you may have a stuck pressure switch.

Any other error codes?

Take a read thru this post

If you have a ND error code key into my trouble shooting comments of May 15, 2009
This forum member had clutch issues also that are comingled into the troubleshooting I don’t want to confuse you with your issue.

Here is the Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

You can pump out the excess Tub water with this process from the Service Manual;

I would go to page 16 of the SM lower right hand part of page, Board Output Test and turn on the drain pump in service mode to pump out the tub.

Enter Service Mode by pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads “00”

Pressing the Delicates key will lock the lid. Now press the Presoak key the drain pump will turn on. Stop with off button or hit the Presoak key.

Post back with an update and if you want to put on your DIY hat… let me know.

Code nd FAV6800AWW, Serial number 10

Hello HopelessR,
Don’t buy a clutch I don’t feel it’s a clutch issue at this point. I hope you can hang in there for some basic troubleshooting. I’m an owner like you not a repair person but I have worked some issues. I feel with the info supplied that you have a true “nd” alarm. The “nd” alarm is triggered when the washer fails to drain completely as monitored by the pressure switch input to the control board and the factory program time limit required for draining the washer. I have never experienced an “nd” alarm until this evening. This was a user induced “nd” failure by pumping wash water back into the tub during the drain cycle of Quick Wash cycle. I started a Quick Wash cycle with no clothes in the washer and with the remaining three settings set to min settings. At the 22 min mark the washer started the drain pump and began a slow spin CCW of the wash basket. It took several minutes of pumping wash water back into the wash tub to trigger “nd” alarm. The washer indicated time stayed at the 21 min mark until the “nd” alarm triggered. 1st test; could you start a Quick Wash cycle with what you would consider a full wash load with the settings I mentioned and let’s see what the results are. I don’t feel you have a clutch issue with no dc/UC error codes to the console. I believe at this point that you have a drain restriction problem. I can’t explain why the washer completes the cycle with the wash basket empty at this point. The 2nd test, do you have a deep sink you can pump the wash water into and observe the stream output? The stream my FAV6800AWW will produce is about a 3” vertical column of water out of the drain pipe held over the deep sink with the drain pump running and no clothes in the wash basket. If you have a deep sink and a helper that can turn on the drain pump in service mode as outlined below we can compare your drain pump output to mine.
You can turn on the drain pump in Service Mode with the process below.
1. Enter Service Mode by pressing both the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys simultaneously until the washer beeps.

2. Next you need to go into the Board Output Test by pressing the Delicates key; your display should now read “ot”.

3. Now press the Presoak key this will start the drain pump and it should begin to empty the tub.

You can press the Off button to stop the drain pump.
If the output stream is low we can troubleshoot the restriction starting at the Sump Cap Item 9 and work back toward the drain pump.
I’ll hang in there with you if you want to continue to troubleshoot the issue. Maybe we can get some suggestions from other forum members. Rich

Pump running non stop.

On the left hand side of the dishwasher (looking from the front, open door) there is the water inlet port. Behind it is a float assembly that determines how much water is in the dishwasher and how much it needs to add or pump out.
If you pull the outside, panel, you will see that float assembly. Check for loose connection. Since you are getting no error codes, if everything looks OK, I recommend either schedule a service call or replace that assembly. If problems continue, the main controller board (PCB) is the next most probable cause.
Please report back with what you find. Thanks!
