Question about Kenmore Dryers

Trouble shoot moter on dryer

Dryer would make a humming sound when I press the on button. Now it doesn't do anything. I thought I smelled a strange odder also. The door switch seems to be working. I checked the continuity of the thermal fuse and it was good. I'm thinking maybe its the motor. I also turned the drum with the on button depressed and it wouldn't start turning.

It may be the drive belt from the motor to the drum. If the dryer top flips up, you can see if the belt is intact, or is there a bottom panel that is removable? In any case the belt needs to be inspected. With that said, the 'strange odor' may very well be the motor. The motor / belt needs to be visually inspected. If anything is opened for inspection, be mindful of live wires and contacts.

SOURCE: Maytag Neptune Dryer humming but not running

This sounds like the motor is siezed or burned out. I wish I knew how much a motor is, but the Neptune is a good dryer so it would probably be worth it to get a new motor if indeed that's the problem.

SOURCE: The Drum on my LG DLE2512W Dryer will not turn

no problem with motor or control board. fault is with the motor capacitor only. this is often attached to the motor or near it. the value of the capacitor will be printed on it (usually about 8uf) and you should be able to source from an electrical spares shop

SOURCE: My non-starting dryer

Make sure you perform all checks with the dryer UNPLUGGED.

Double check the thermal fuse just to be sure. It will be located on the air blower housing and should be a white plastic component with two wires connected to it. It should read a short if good. I could be mistaken, but I believe the drum light will still come on with the thermal fuse blown. If I led you astray in my write up, I do apologize. All dryers are not configured the same.

If the thermal fuse is good, pull the connector from the drive motor and inspect it. I have found where these connectors look like they are tight, but actually aren't, causing the connector and wires to burn. If the connector checks good, you have a couple of options. You could have a defective motor. Take a resistance check across the blue wire and violet wire on the motor. This should be your start winding. Resistance should be between 2.4 to 3.8 ohms. If it reads anything higher than 4 ohms, it's recommended that you replace it. If the motor is okay you may have a defective belt switch and/or centrifugal switch. I'm not sure how your dryer is configured. I will need the COMPLETE model number (located around the door opening) to be sure.

Before I can give you further advice about troubleshooting or replacing parts, I need to be sure of what you find. Please post back and let me know.

SOURCE: dryer wont start when start button is pressed, but humming sound

I'd sure start by making sure the belt isn't broken. You can usually see the belt with a flashlight after accessing the panel (some are in front, others in the rear) - don't go probing around bare armed without unplugging the unit....

Sounds like the belt that rotates the drum may be slipping. Does your drum turn ok when no clothes are in it? If you have to start it by hand and then it rotates ok chances are you need more belt tension.

Hello tancrbtt - It sounds like your unit may have one or more problems. Either the belt slipped off the idle pulley and/or dryer belt and needs replacing, a faulty motor or a common failure between control and motor. Consult a professional to accurately diagnosis the dryer and to assist with the repairs.

it is time to replace it, that sound and smell is from the dryer motor itself.

Dryer Start Problem

Several things could cause this....depending on the type of buzz you are hearing...it could be a defective motor. Sounds are difficult to describe in text...but if the motor is bad, I would expect it to make a low pitched humming sound rather that an intense mechanical buzz. In this case the motor would also tend to get hotter the more you try, which could cause the smell.
