What engine? Timing belt problem? Bent valves? Warped head, blown casket? These are suggestions as a possible cause. If you know you have it in time, do a compression check on all cylinders first to determine if there's an internal problem. It's a starting point to help diagnose.

CAR STALLED. DISCOVERED TIMING BELT HAD BROKEN. REPLACED BELT. STILL WILL NOT START BUT WILL TURN OVER

It sounds like the timing is still off, which will not allow it to start, or you have a faulty cam, or crank sensor.

Car stalled and will not restart. Makes a whirring noise when you try to start. Toyota Rav 4 1997

If the engine is turning over much faster than usual when you try to start it, you may have a stripped timing gear or broken timing chain/belt.

If it is not turning over at all, the starter motor is not engaging the flywheel.

2000 ford escort zx2 quit running on the wife this morning still has electric\r\npower starter sounds like it turns but it will not start dont sound like ti turns motor over never heard of a start problem...

Pull the upper timing belt cover, just some 8mm bolts, and verify the if the engine is turning or not. If the timing belt breaks it will sound like the engine is spinning faster with the starter than normal. The great thing is that these engines are non interference and will not suffer valve damage if the belt breaks. If the engine is not turning with the starter then you have a bad solenoid in the starter and it will have to be replaced. You can check my profile for information on how to do the timing belt yourself if it comes to that.

Here is a link to a tip I wrote nate. It sounds like your timing belt slipped a tooth or ten. Or it may be broken. Does the starter motor seem like its turning the motor much faster than it normally does? You say that you can see the external drive belts turning, if this is true then your starter is engaging correctly. If your timing is off, or belt is broken, the engine will not make compression. Put your hand over the intake while someone cranks it to see if you feel that intake stroke pull on your hand. Read my tip in the link above for lots more info.

Sounds like broke timing belt but timing belt is not broke i have the v 6 dohc motor

What or how does it sound like a broken timing belt? Is the engine knocking? If the belt is not broken, it might have slipped and the timing may now be off, enough to cause the sounds you're hearing.

Friday it sputtered and shut off 2 times the thrid time I started it I gave it some gas and it drove for a few feet then started sputtering and smoking from the right side of the engine. I pulled over...

Have the water pump checked. The bearing maybe seizing up causing the pulley to jam and smoke up the belt. Also as the motor got hot from pump not spinning, may have caused the motor to shut down as an overheating precatuion.

You can easily verify broken timing belt with a quick compression test. I cannot think of another cause for that symptom.

The most likely senario is that the water pump went bad which caused the overheating in the first place. Then after the engine shut down, the water pump seized up. When the engine was restarted, the timing belt started to smoke because the water pump, which runs off the timing belt, was not turning. Since the engine overheated to the point of shutting down, blown head gaskets are a possibility. Put a new timing belt and water pump on it and start it up. If it runs OK, you're good to go.
