Canister powerhead brush does not seem to spin when the carpet level adjustment is on any level other than "high". Could it be something as simple as needing a new belt and is there a...

The belt is worn/stretched to the point that it cannot take the load on low level setting due to more resistance against the carpet and there is also no signifagant difference between the two belts except for expecting a longer belt life from the whisper belt. While it is apart make sure there is no hair or carpet strands in the rollers and around the belt pulleys

It's possible you simply need a new belt or roller brush. Place the power nozzle upside-down turn the vacuum on. Ensure the brush turns. If it doesn't, the belt has broken or is too worn to turn it. Replace the belt. Make sure the tension is properly set prior to reassembling the power nozzle.
Next, with the power nozzle upside down, run the flat of your palm across the brush area. If you can barely feel the bristles, it needs replaced. A good brush will loosen the yarn and strings, but needs to be cleaned periodically.
As long as the powerhead motor is running, there is no need to replace it. If it's not running, look for a reset button and press it. There could also be a broken wire, loose connection, or bad switch causing a power head motor to not operate..

We have a Kenmore canister vacuum cleaner. the carpet cleaning attachment, I think is called the power mate has a beater that is intermittently working now

Your hose could be bad. The wires frequently go bad up by the handle switch. also could possibly be the wand, those go bad. You can check that by attaching your powermate directly to the nozzle without the wand and see if the same problem is there. Do you have the mini powermate also? the one that is usually mounted on the wand. If so plug that in directly to the hose and see if you have the same problem. If that tool works fine then the problem is in the powerhead.

I have the same problem with intermitant power, however, it does not make sense that the problem is in the upper powerhead (which is what a repair guy told me) because-- when I use the other attachements...

You can test the auxiliary plug to the roller/beater attachment with a volt meter if you know how and take precautions. Check for 115-120 volts at the beater/roller attachment plug. If voltage is there and the beater/roller doesn't run, the problem is with the attachment. If not, then the problem is in the power switch or somewhere else that feeds power to the lower attachment.

Brush does not turn on my vaccum

If there is no suction when you disconnect the beater bar assembly near the hand hold where you grab the vacuum, then there may be either a restriction in the vacuum line between there and the vacuum section (that rolls around behind you), or the vacuum line from the handle point to the rollaround section is not properly connected. This all assumes the vacuum motor in the rollaround is running.

The beater bar section does nothing but cause dirt particles to be sucked into the vacuum system. The vacuum or suction is created in the rollaround unit.

Very likely it's the cord at the nozzle neck. These cords flex when you vacuum and they often break internally where the cord goes into the neck. Turn the vacuum on and wiggle the cord at the powerhead and see if the powerhead comes on and off. If this happens, then you will have to replace the cord.
On some of the early models, the receptacle in the hose, where it plugs into the top of the wands, will break away from the plastic pins it sits in, and the receptacle will slide back into the handle, which means that it will not plug into the powerhead connection when you connect the hose. You can check this by looking at the end of the hose and observing if the receptacle is sitting flush with the opening it sits in. If it is pushed back, it will not make a complete connection with the powerhead cord that is sitting at the top of the wands.

    Powerhead woes

You should not use this powerhead on any natural or oriental fibre carpet. If you check the brush roller, you will see that the bristle extends out the bottom of the powerhead quite far and that the bristle is very stiff. This is o.k. for synthetic carpets, but will be too aggressive on natural carpet. It will pull material out of the carpet and eventually thin it out. You should use a passive air turbo or a carpet tool for this rug.
As far as the belt is concerned, if it is over a year old, it is due to be replaced. Old belts are stretched and will come off because they are worn out. You might also check to make sure the motor is in place correctly. It is very common that when people want to check the inside of the powerhead, they commonly remove the three screws that secure the motor, thinking that these screws will open the powerhead. If you observe the area between the screws, you will notice that there is a "no screwdriver" warning there. The four screws for the hood are recessed and not as obvious as the motor screws, so this mistake happens quite a bit.
