2001 Cavalier passenger rear brake locks up at slow speeds, shakes at higher speeds, mechanics changed drums 3 times, keeps coming back

Had the brakes done and now the passenger side rear brake locks up and releases at slow speeds and squeals at higher speeds. The brake mechanics replaced the drum 3 times now but the problem keeps coming back. They now say it needs a new rear hub, but I have lost my trust in these guys. What do you think?

I think it is time to find an accredited brake specialist . At the best with a hub it may be bad wheel bearings but I consider it a problem with the mechanics and their lack of commitment to fixing your problem

Testimonial: "I took it to Advanced Auto Service & Tire Center. I thought they were accredited, but their explanations don't sound right to me. We had the rear brakes done first, that's when we started to have the problem. At that time they said the problem was because we didn't have the front brakes done yet. Then when we had the front brakes done, they had to replace a rear drum. Then the same problem occurred and they replaced same drum again, but said they won't warranty it again. Now they say it is the hub, that its not holing the rim centered."

tyre shops have a brake place as that allows them to use the shop when there are no tyre sales . They use "mechanics" .need I say more I wold find a dedicated accredited brake shop tha concentrates solely on brakes and clutches.. What they are saying "we cannot get the back right until you get the front fixed " is a load of hogwash. If there was no problem before they touched the rear then there would be even less of a problem if they were capable of doing the job.

SOURCE: 96 Cavalier passenger rear brake lock up when wet or cold

Bad PROPORTION VALVE ... the back brakes should only be doing 30% of the stopping with a bad proportion valve it will send more pressure to the back during braking and cause it to lock up. Good Luck and thanks for using FIX YA

SOURCE: REAR BRAKE DRUM WON,T COME OFF

Make sure the wheel turns and adjuster backed off . If you can see a Countersunk screw in the face of the hub remove it.  If hitting it fails , usually you can see two small 8,10 or 12 mm holes in the face of the hub . Find the correct bolts and screw them into the the hub , it should force the the drum to pop off . What car is it , and does it have tapered wheel bearings on the outside of the drum?

SOURCE: i have a 2001 cavalier and the rear brakes keep

Was this problem there before you changed the Brake shoes. The cavalier has shoes on the rear.
It seems like the leaning show the SHORT one is not facing the front of the car where it should be. If you check the shoes one is shorter than the other in a set. Hope this works. Some model year Cavalier also had a problem with the Backing plate the plate the shoes attaches to.

Do you have abs system, if so, check for applicable abs codes, see if anything shows up? Go from there.

Rear brake locks up at slow speeds on 2001 cavalier

i would have the rear brake limiter mechanism checked first as this device regulates brake pressure so it is equal to both back wheels, if this is ok i'd check that the wheel cylinders aren't sticking and that the brake shoe assembly has been replaced properly

My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 V-8 shakes something awful sometimes when I brake at speeds of 50mph+. It then starts to wobble and doesn`t brake good. What is causing this to happen and how do I fix it?...

UNLESS there is a major front end issue the most common cause of the vibration is the rotors being out of round. this is easily correct by having a brake shop resurface the rotors. also the vibration could be coming from the rear as well. the way to determine if it rear or front is the next time you brake somewhere that it usually has the vibration try applying only the parking brake instead of the brake pedal. NOTE....when making this check be sure to hold the parking brake release button to prevent lock up of the brakes. the parking brake only works the rear brakes. this will determine where it is coming from. the back brakes will have either brake drums or either brake rotors. same philosophy but different operating mechanics. either way it can all be corrected by resurfacing the rotors and/or drums

are they adjusted up tight? You can check this yourself. Jack up one wheel at a time, take the wheel off, take the drum off, and adjust (#16 in the picture) until the drum barely goes on.
