Question about Dell Dimension 5100 (D51L1) PC Desktop
When I push the button on the tower to turn on the computer, there is a high pitch whisting sound. I have already tried shutting it off and turning it back on -- also have checked all the connections to the tower and outlet. Need to know what the problem is and if a low tech person can fix it. Please help, I am very grateful.
The high pitch sound could be a faulty monitor or the switch mode power supply. When the computer is running, turn off the monitor and if the sound is still there then the fault is most likely the switch mode power supply. Purchase a new switch mode power supply, make sure the wattage rating is the same or greater. Swapping the switch mode power supply is easy, take a note of the power connectors you remove so you can reconnect them with the new switch mode power supply. The power supply is usually fixed to the case with 4 screws. If the noise is from the monitor, then you should replace the monitor or repaired by a technician, a low tech person should not tackle this.

Sounds like it could be a bearing in your hard drive. is this problem constant? If so, I would open up the tower and disconnect the hard drive and then power up the tower again. if the sound goes away--you need to get a new hard drive. If not, you could have some dust bunnies in your cooling fan.
