The bi metal defrost is a defrost thermostat also known as a defrost limiter, it turns of the defrost heater after it warms up the evaporator sufficiently, it resets itself once the compressor comes back on after the defrost timer has timed out.

I have a Daewoo ERF-334M fridge/freezer and the auto-defrost has stopped working. The evaporator gets covered in ice within about 3 weeks from it being manually defrosted. I've checked the resistance...

More than likely if your fridge has a bi metal, or a defrost timer, its one of those two issues. Leaning more towards the bi metal. If the bi metal is encased in ice and is reading more than 0 ohms its your bi metal. (small round sick that sits on the tubing) Your heater should be reading around 25 ohms or something like that. it should be fine. If it does not have a bi metal it works on a thermistor and then you more than likely have a electrical control board issue that not forcing the fridge into defrost. Lmk if you need more help!

sound like you have a defrost problem. The evaporator is behind the panel where the fan is. YOu will need to remove the panel, and test some of the defrosting components. Behind that panel are the heater and bi-metal. ( Bi-metal is also called defrost terminator ) the bi-metal looks like a little cylinder ( about the size of a stack of 8 quarters ) it should be attached to the freezing coils. With the refrigerator unplugged, make sure you have continuity through the bi-metal. This may involve cutting the wires to check, so leave enough wire to be able to splice back together if the bi-metal is good. ( The bi-metal must be ice cold before it will have continuity through it, as the heater heats up the coils it warms the bi-metal enough to loose continuity, therefore shutting the heater off ). Now with the bi-metal cold and no continuity through it, replace the bi-metal. If there is continuity, then check the heating element for continuity at both ends of its wires. If yu can check the ohm load on the heater it should read somewhere around 28ohms. If all these parts are good then it would have to be the defrost timer. If you had the model # I could go into further details on how to check the timer. Hope this helps

If the ice is covering the whole evaporator coil then you have abad defrost problem. The defrost system consist of a defrost timer, a bi-metal thermostat and defrost heater/heaters. If the machine is running non stop chances are its the timer thats bad, but also look at the bi-metal thermostat to see if it is disfigured(the top will look popped out and swollen). Last thing is to check for continuity in the defrost heaters. All three parts are fairly cheap and from my experiance chances are its the timer or bi-metal thermostat.

Ice forming on back wall of freezer, not making ice, not getting air flow to refrigerator

Thaw out the evaporator and check your defrost heater for continuity. Check you bi-metal thermostat for signs of swelling. The bi-metal has to be @25f before continuity can be confirmed on it.5051637.jpg Check your defrost timer or adaptive defrost control if the heater and bi-metal check out. Notice the bi_metal mounted upper right hand corner. It opens and kills the heater once the temp gets hot enough to melt the frost.(50f)

I'm getting frost in my freezer and loosing temperature in my frig

Hi, Unplug the refrigerator. The automatic defrost is not working properly. You will need to remove the rear panel inside the freezer section and test the defrost heater and bi-metal switch. The bi-metal switch located on the top of the evaporator coil needs to be tested while it is still cold. Check and see if the switch has continuity. If the bi-metal switch shows an open circuit, replace it. If it shows a closed circuit, test the defrost heater the same way. If both the defrost heater and the bi-metal switch are ok, the defrost timer will need changed.
You will need to defrost the evaporator coils with a hair dryer. Please let me know if this helps you at all or if I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

2001 top freezer won't defrost

Hi, You will need to check three different parts of the defrost cycle. The most common problem is the bi-metal switch. UNPLUG the refrigerator and remove the rear inside freezer panel and locate the bi-metal switch attached to the evaporator coil in the upper corner. You will need a voltage/ohms meter for this test. Check the switch to see if it has continuity. Note: This switch has to be cold in order to test it! If it tests open circuit, you will need to change the bi-metal switch. If the bi-metal switch tests ok, then test the defrost heater the same as you tested the bi-metal switch.
IIf both of these parts test ok, you will need to change the defrost timer.
Please get em a model # and I can assist you on locating the timer.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

The freezer isn't freezing and the refridgerator isn't staying cold. i unplug it to defrost it and it will work for about a week ten its the same thing all over again

guff21, you have a problem with defrost cycle.
3 things, defrost heater, bi metal, and timer. either one of the three goes bad, same problem appears.

check the defrost heater by resistance. it should have a resistance
check the timer if it is turning and tunning and transfering from cooling mode to heating mode and vice versa.
you can only check the bi-metal if its all frozen up. the bi-metal is close at freezing temperature and opens at thaw themperature.

i hope i was able to solve your problem.

Freezer compartment of fridge freezer working ok but fridge section not cooling

ON ALMOST ALL REFRIGERATORS, THE FRESH FOOD SECTION GETS ITS COOLING FROM THE FREEZER BY AIR CIRCULATION. IF THE AIR ISN'T CIRCULATING, FINDING THE CAUSE WILL REMEDY THE PROBLEM. THE MOST FREQUENT FAILURE IS THE DEFROST CYCLE AND IS EASILY DIAGNOSED BY LOOKING IN THE FREEZER SECTION. IF FROST IS PRESENT ON THE BACK WALL, (OR FLOOR OF OLD MAGIC CHEF TOP MOUNT), THEN A DEFROST FAILURE HAS OCCURED. THERE ARE THREE COMPONENTS IN THE DEFROST CIRCUIT. THE CONTROL, THE HEATER, AND THE BI-METAL. FIND THE DEFROST CONTROL AND SET TO DEFROST. IF THE HEATER COMES ON, THE CONTROL IS BAD. IF THE HEATER DOES NOT COME ON, EITHER THE HEATER OR THE BI-METAL IS BAD.
TO FIND THE BI-METAL, FOLLOW ONE SIDE OF THE HEATER WIRE FROM THE HEATER TO A SMALL ROUND DISC WITH TWO WIRES COMING OUT OF IT. THAT IS THE BI-METAL.DETERMINE WHICH IS BAD WITH VOLTAGE OR RESISTANCE MEASUREMENTS.
