Samsung HDD division was only recently sold to Seagate.
"ST" is a Seagate number so your drive cannot be old - manufactured by ex-Samsung factory now part of Seagate.

Utility from Seagate (e.g. Seatools) should be able to display from S.M.A.R.T the number online hours.

The SMART function on your computer monitors your SATA hard drive to let you know if it is at risk of failing. This software detects bad sectors on your hard drive and repairs them when you initiate a repair. You can use the Disk Utility on your Apple computer to repair the SMART errors on your hard drive. The Disk Utility has an easy to use interface so even a novice can perform this task.

Insert your OSX install disc into the computer's optical drive. Start the computer while holding down the "C" key. Choose your language from the menu that appears. Click the "Installer" tab and then click "Open Disk Utility" form the menu, Click the "Disk Utitlity" icon from the menu and then click the "First Aid" tab at the top of the menu. Click the "Repair Disk" button and wait for the repair to complete. Restart your computer. Windows PC Click the "Start" button and then click on the "Computer" option. Right-click on your SATA hard drive and then click the "Properties" button. Click on the "Tools" tab and then click the "Check Now" button. Click on the box next to "Automatically fix file system errors" and then box next to "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. It might take some time depending on the of the disk be patient. Have no input while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input might further damage your hard drive. Click the "Start" button. Restart your computer after the scan and repair have finished to clear your SMART error.

Hd502hj problem

Windows 7 can be a pain it always seems to think the large drives are damaged whether external or usb drives.

You could run the chkdsk disk utility Click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to repair any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive or an easier way to run the chkdsk utility Click start control panel administrative tools computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart have no input while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may further damage your computers operating system and Hard Drive. Hope this helps.

Why always the RED LIGHT?

Maybe the detection circuit for the diagnostic lights is faulty, if the disk utility found no issues I would continue using the hardware.

Hi, I have recently purchsed HD502HJ SATA drive (500 GB with 16 MB Cache) at system boot there is head clicking sound. some times it hangs and not boot and take some attempts to start. so far it bootup...

That clicking is almost always the sound of a hard drive failing. It is the sound made when the heads attempt to park. You may have purchased an old or a defective drive. If you are able to get this running, immediately back up all of your data to a flash drive to preserve it because there is no guarantee the drive will continue to work the next time.

Hi, the thing to do here is to narrow down what could be causing the problem, initial suspects would be the RAM chips. If you have known working ones you can try in it, try these, if not, try without one, then swap them over, or even try without both.

Also, remove any components that aren't strictly necessary, i.e. hard drives & cables, cd-rom/dvd drives, extra PCI cards, network cards etc

Another suspect may be just a loose connection, try taking everything out, re-seating it. Again, pay particular attention to the RAM chips.

It could possibly even be a faulty processor, have you another you could try? Try taking it out and re-seating it.

Give me a site for cheking hdd warrenty

From the manufacturer's web-site:

http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/search/supportSearchResultView.do?group=&group_cd=&type=&type_cd=&subtype=&subtype_cd=&model_nm=HD502HJ+&dType=D&mType=&model_cd=&menu=repairpolicy&prd_ia_cd=&disp_nm=HD502HJ+

the warranty for the HD502HJ is "12 months".

Many of the drives sent to SAMSUNG for exchange, are actually defect-free. Often, there are configuration issues or corrupt data causing the difficulty. Before you send your drive in for exchange, we suggest that you try the following troubleshooting option. Many times this down-time and inconvenience caused by unnecessarily removing, exchanging, and re-installing the hard drive.

Click: On-line hard disk troubleshooting page

to run "checks" against your disk-drive.
