SONY CYBERSHOT DSC W12 MALFUNCTION
Hi there, i think i have a mechanical problem with my camera. I have had the camera for 2 and a half years, and noticed the problem over the last 3 months, getting progressively worse. while having the camera switched on and on picture taking 'green icon' mode, you see the menu on screen flick automatically between modes. i have changed batteries but problem still there. Also, when about to take a picture, as i press button, the screen goes blank and you hear some whirring of the lens. you have to click the power button a number of times before it allows me to switch off or take a picture. Now the problem is more apparent and i couldn't switch it off to collapse the lens. is this problem common? how much could it be to repair the camera as it would be a shame to chuck it.
please help!!

-   Same symptoms. My camera started acting up in cold weather not it does so all the time. Tried newly charged batteries and reagular (non-rechargable batteries) to no avail. Camera turns on, then screen goes black and lense stays extended. I have been searching the internet and can't find a solution-   Guest May 27, 2008

I have the same problem with my Sony W12. When I start my Sony W12 the lens goes out but then the screen goes black like the batteries are empty. (the batteries are new).
I cant take any picture and I cant turn the camera off.
If I choose review mode I can see that the batteries are full. I can turn the camera off in review mode.
When the problem started I could take some pictures before it went down but now the w12 goes down direct when I tries to start it.
Is there anybody who managed to repair the Sony W12?

-   The same as already described: DSC-W12, worked perfectly for about 3 years, beautiful pictures and easy to take and use. In picture-mode I can hardly take 1 or 2 pictures, then the camera decides batteries are too low to use, even if they're fresly loaded. Switching to review or other mode batteries show full. I tried new reloadable batteries, new non-reloadable, but have no other ideas.
It's still looking new, so I don't want to throw it away, and I am strongly against throwing away reparable products. But in the shop they told me reparing will be more expensive then buying a new (better, much cheaper then 3 y ago, etc.). As it seems to be a technical of a software problem, has anyone contacted Sony about it?

-   Hi, I have the exact same problem with my W12, the screen goes blank and the lens won`t go back inside. I have also been using it in some cold weather and at first I thought that was the reason, but now it does this all the time. Have any of you solved the problem?-

Hi, I have a similar problem to one described with the same model DSC W12. Once trying to take a picture on "Green" mode the display goes blank, you can hear the lance clicking and you can't switch off the camera at all. To be able to switch it off you have to go to a different mode. The problem has occurred a few months ago only in a really cold weather, but now it got really bad and occurs every time I want to use it. It got impossible to use it at all. I really like this camera for good quality pictures and large display and I would love to get it fixed. Can you please advice what might be wrong here? And how much would it cost to fix it? Thanks
