No dial up? I'm not sure if anywhere in civilized wold anyone with a computer still uses a dial up Internet modem.

See if there is a Win 7 driver for the USB device as the one you have may not be for Win 7.
Check with the manufacturer.
You may also want to check device manager and make sure all devices are enabled and functioning.

This series of laptop has several design faults, motherboard replacement is the only fix from HP however many users have had their mobo replaced only to find the same problem returns.
The only permenent fix I'd recommend for this problem is to buy a USB wifi .
