SOURCE: My Seagate FreeAgent Pro 500GB
After all of the countless "solutions" I've come across online and otherwise, NONE of them worked. Absolutely NONE. However, there was one common thread amongst all of them that rang very clear with me. Whether it was overheating or faulty parts altogether, I found the solution. Rather than pay HUNDREDS of dollars to have some 3rd party recover my data (like SeaGate tech support suggested I do), I ripped open my SeaGate enclosure, took the hard drive out and simply slipped it into a new, generic enclosure (CoolMax 3.5" External Enclosure to be exact). That cost me all of $20. Problem solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How less stressful is that for you????

well firstly if u wana recover ur data u have to make the external hdd power up but thats the major area of issue that its not powering up. the difference in plug doesnt make a difference cuz u can use the same plug, the voltage is same thorugh out in ur place from the substation. so it might be a possibility that when u connected ur hdd,the power ON/OFF switch was awredy ON IF hdd has one. so wat i feel is dat u can try opening the hdd and then connect the hdd to ur desktop with help of the BUS CABLE used to connect the HDDs in desktops. so in dat case i would suggest that u go through the manual of ur external hdd to see how to access the the casing in which the hdd is there.then if u happen to get thorugh n it turns on then u dont have to recover ur data. it would still be there. HOWEVER,its recommended that u dont try these things personaaly if u are'nt too tech savy. u shud consult a tech or a freind who knows abt this.

SOURCE: seagate freeagent drive
The seagate freeagent should be reconigized by windows. The question is are you adding an additional partition or do you want to create a brand new partion. I'm assuming you want to add.
You can add more space to existing primary partitions and logical drives by extending them into adjacent, contiguous unallocated space on the same disk. To extend a basic volume, it must be formatted with the NTFS ile system. You can extend a logical drive within contiguous free space in the extended partition that contains it. If you extend a logical drive beyond the free space available in the extended partition, the extended partition grows to contain the logical drive as long as the extended partition is followed by contiguous unallocated space.
To extend a basic volume
Make note of the number of the basic volume you want to extend.
Selects the basic volume, n, you want to extend into contiguous, empty space on the same disk.
You cannot extend the current system or boot partitions.
size=n The amount of space, in megabytes (MB), to add to the current partition. If you do not specify a size, the disk is extended to take up all of the next contiguous unallocated space.
Hope this helps!

Yes you can just take the hard drive out of the case, can use it with any other case, you can also just put it inside your computer and connect it to the sata cable :)
Heres a case you could use for your drive... Click Here
