Toro 20017, bevel gear, pin groove removal

Toro 20017. Self propel does not work. Replaced belt, adjusted cable. No go. Took tranny apart to find worn gears. Ordered bevel, pinion, and bearing. How the heck do you remove that stinkin' pin-goove from the bevel/axle??!!

SOURCE: Self propelled feature stopped functining.

Have you checked the drive belt? There should be a belt running from the main shaft (above blade) out to the wheel drive. You didn't list model number but I'm assuming it's front wheel drive. There should be a cover over this belt so it might be hard to see from underneath. Also there should be a cover on top going to the drive transmission. If the belt is OK, check to be sure lever is moving the transmission lever.

SOURCE: Hi, I have a JS63C self propelled push mower that

Hi Jerry. Sounds like your transmission cable needs to be adjusted. Since 1st gear is easiest for it to move in, you probably have little pressure on the clutch. Take the cover off the back of the mower (Torx T25 or T30 can't remember at the moment.) The spring on the cable should be measured when relaxed (handle not being held) then when you squeeze the S/P handle, it should stretch the spring 10mm. A friend or a clamp will make holding the handle and measuring more simple. Adjust the bracket the cable clips into in front of the tranny to obtain the desired 10mm, and you should be under power again.

First take the cover off .Then tighten drive cable see if it is loose if it is replace belt .If not sometimes drive cables will stretch to the limit of breaking.

My toro 6.5hp 22" front drive mower does not dive

There is a transmission, a pinion gear connected to the belt end, and a larger bevel gear connected to the axle, all inside an aluminum shell, we could call it a basic transmission. On my Toro the bevel gear had flat spots on about a third of the teeth, hence it wasn't continuously driving the axle. A new pinion and bevel gear where found as a set on Ebay for $30 plus $5 shipping.

Also the plastic gears in each of the front wheels can wear out and you need new wheel assemblies, they cost about $15 apiece at Sears if you pick them up, $10 more if shipped. Take your old one in, they can match it.

I have a Toro Proline walk behind . Problems with the self propel

I suspect the drive belt, not the Hydro. Especially if the drive belt was never replaced. The belts are known to stretch and wear out over time. It's a cheap part.

My toro self propelled isn't self propelling

It may just be a matter of adjusting the cable. Sometimes they dont get them adjusted just right from the factory, heres what you do. Locate the plastic shroud in front of the push mower that covers the drive unit.Determine which screwdriver or torx bit is needed to remove shroud and remove it. After removal you will see a pulley with belt around it, as you pull the handle back to engage self propel you should see the pulley move into the belt to put tension on the belt. You can do this with it running to see if enough tension is being put on the belt,if not, locate the cable end where the small bracket holds the cable in place. Loosen the cable bracket and move cable until you have correct tension again, hope this helps.

Front ppropelled mower

You dont adjust the belt, you adjust the cable that moves the pulley into the belt. There will be a small single bracket close to the engine side of the mower that holds the cable in place. Simply loosen bracket and move cable until pulley contacts belt enough to engage self propel.

Toro mower model 20017, self propelled will not work and wheels will not roll backward. What is the problem?

either a gear wheel has busted inside the plastic wheel hub. Or the drive belt is off it's track and wedged between the disc wheel and the frame. easy to pry off.

Toro 20016 self propel

If you take the wheels off and remove the belt from the small pulley on the the front axle underneath the pulley you should see a small transmission. You usually can split this unit in half . You will see two gears and sometimes one plastic and one metal. The plastic one is usually the culprit. Hope this will help you out. Donnyb60
