Ejecting does not remove or turn off the power it merely lets the computer know that the device is not to be used until plugged in again.
If the file format is not recognized by your operating system, format the drive and install your computer's file system on it.

SOURCE: computer won't recognize hard drive

A few things to check but assumes USB for other interfaces similar steps may be followed

1. ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer.

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply (Dont use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating eg. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly)

5. always use the same port for connectin your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about.

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues carry on reading.

Go to your control panel and then administrative tools, select computer management.

Now select Disk Management and expand the window.

Your drive should be listed here (if not then you need to check your computer hardware has not got any issues before proceeding)

If your drive is listed and says healthy then right click on it an select Properties, click tools and then error checking, Check now, tick the two boxes and then start.

This will attempt to fix any errors on the drive. It may also ask you to restart which is fine. Allow it to finish its work or you could corrupt the drive. If all went well you should be able to use it normally again.

If you drive was listed ut did NOT say healthy then right click and select Format. Choose NTFS as the file system and do not tick any boxes you do NOT want quick format. Again start and let it do its thing. when it is done restart your computer and you should be good to go.

SOURCE: my computer doesn't recognize my external hard drive

Try the external hard-drive in another computer.
If that computer also refuses to recognize it, then there is something wrong with the external hard-drive.

I bought and old firefly 20gb hard drive and was wondering if there is a program or app I could use to open and view files on my window 8.1 laptop

You could buy an external HDD case that's compatible with the type and size of drive you bought. Probably SATA or IDE. The external HDD plugs into your USB port and will automatically be recognized by the Win 8.1 OS

When a drive cannot be recognized it is a serious matter because it might indicate that the logic board has gone south. Simply plug the drive into a known working computer and see if the bios sees it. If so, then it is the OS on other computer that is having issues. But also check then to see if drive is recognized in first machine bios just to make sure.it is an OS problem.

Can't turn off Hard Drive

The error means that you are using a file on the external hard drive and that it can not close that file when it is use. You have to close the program that is using the file first.

Example:
Lets go on the assumption that you have your music collection on the external. If you still have your music player running when you try to disconnect, you will be greeting with the same error message.

If the external contains any files that your Operating System uses, you will get this message anytime the computer is on. An example of this can be your "Page File".

Shutting the computer down correctly is your safest bet until you find exactly what file is being used and what program is using it. During shut down, the computer closes any running programs. With no programs running, it will safely disconnect from the external HD because there will be no files in use.

If you manually disconnect it while the file is in use, you could very easily corrupt the file and make it unusable. This is comparable to an Operating System getting corrupted from a computer not being shut down correctly (pulling the power from wall without doing a shut down).

Hope this helps.

How do i keep my folders and run them off my external hard drive. with out putting them on my computer

If you mean accessing files vs. programs, do the following: plug in your hard drive, wait until the pc recognizes and installs it, open up "My computer" shrink the window by clicking on the middle icon at top right of the window. Move the window (click and hold the mouse on top colored bar to drag it) to one side so you can see the folder(s) /file(s) you wish to copy and the window showing your external drive. Now you can simply drag the folders over from the pc desktop to your external hard drive.
If you are referring to running programs from your external drive, you need to insert your program(s) install disk to your pc and when going through the install menu(s) you should see a question asking where you wish to install the program and it will have a default location which you can easily change by typing the location of your external drive or selecting it from "browse" button within install program. Be aware that some files will still be installed to your pc (system registry files) required to interface with the operating system so you can launch the program(s) from your external drive but most likely not independent of the pc containing the main operating system. A bit wordy I know, but hope this helps!

External harddrive

yea this is a hard one you will need a recovery program something good that will go in deep and find all the shadow programs on your (HDD) Hard drive. if your computer does not recognize this HDD or memory stick this means u have reformatted a computer and the HDD or memory stick has been taken out half way through the format process. if you get a recovery program this means u will not get everything off it will only take the shadows of all your programs and files.

I hope this helps
